INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Curious who is hatching chicks now to sell that's relatively close to me - northern part of Indiana. I'm looking for pullets that will be very good egg layers. We're having a hard time keeping up with all of our egg customers. Hate to have to go with hatchery pullets, but will if necessary. We may need to add more duck hens to our flock as well as more and more people are buying the duck eggs -- I hardly have any to use myself! And I'm putting back a couple dozen eggs now for us to dye at Easter, otherwise I might not have any left for us

. It's a good problem to have, though, as more people are appreciating the difference of farm fresh eggs & do not like the store ones anymore

I had trouble with our dog until I got a training collar, It has 3 settings a light shock which is uncomfortable to most people, a buzzing noise and wholly molly which is quite strong. I never had to use anything but the buzzing noise and he wore it anytime he was outside and the chickens were outside their pen. You still have to watch him around chicks. Their constant peeping drives him crazy. I got mine from Amazon and was fairly inexpensive as far as training collars go.

I'm thinking of selling a pair of my German Bielefelder chickens, one rooster and one hen. I've raised them since they were one week old and they are now 15 weeks old and are beautiful. They should be laying in a few weeks. I've just got too many chickens for the space that I have. I have 5 Bielefelders, 15 Isa Browns, 11 months old, and 24 White Leghorn poults one week old. The pics are the parent birds. I'd take $50 for the pair. I'm in NE Indiana, Rex @ 260-740-8911. Leave message if needed.

For those who cringe at the thought of a shock collar, you can also get collars that shoot a mist of citronella, which the dogs don't like. I think that they're around $80. I was looking at them for my 4-month old cattle dog. She isn't attacking the chickens as such, but trying to herd them. Unfortunately, they herd by nipping at the heels of the cattle, so it's the tails with the poultry. Going to work with her on a leash first before resorting to training collars; she behaves pretty well on the leash, but when she's loose....

Fred's Hens might have some heritage RIR. He is in MI but I'm not exactly sure where.

I had some time with the girls today, just what I needed. I had an entourage everywhere I went and couldn't crouch down without 6 or more hens gathering around for attention, poking and prodding and bawking away. They keep me sane by driving me insane sometimes! But it's nice to feel loved.

Margaret has started into brooding again. Speaking of driving me insane...

Meanwhile, in another nest box... There were several open boxes. They just weren't as good as this one, I guess!

Poor Tilde was at the bottom of the stack. "Can't... Breathe...." (P.S., Leahs mom, you may be interested to know that our Tilde seems to be contemplating brooding as well! )

We're up to around 16 eggs a day. I got 18 today! I think my Legbar, Poppy, may have finally started laying, because I've been getting a very, very blue egg every once in a while, more blue than usual for my Easter-eggers.


And speaking of EEs, Wynne and her beard. She looks so plush!

We picked up a shade cover thingy on clearance from TSC a couple weeks ago to cover the most open spot in the chicken yard. The girls seem to have accepted it. Haven't seen the hawk in some days, but I'm not taking any chances. The girls stay in their mini-yard unless I'm out with them. At least for now. They're getting really antsy for free-range, though...

I also got the duck coop completely finished today! So I'll be traumatizing two little duckies tomorrow by moving them into their coop. Frou-frou came outside today while I worked. She spent most of the time out trying and failing to make a dust bath. It was funny, though, watching her roll around in the dirt with her feet in the air! And any time I went around the corner to get something, she followed along, honking away like she was telling me to wait up. The girls didn't seem to notice that she has been gone, or at least most of them. I think Frou'f will have little problem getting back into the flock after her stay inside.


Sorry for the major picture overload. I couldn't decide which I liked the most to share. They all make me smile so much.

Looks like working out a deal. Maybe my chickens are going to Michigan!
