INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Probably shouldn't give my opinion

but...

If I had a dog that did that, I would no longer have the dog. And the dog may not be alive to try it with anyone else.

Went outside and found another dead chick. So I'll never get to know how awesome a rooster my buff Orp would be or what color eggs Druscilla was going to lay. Gonna have to fins another name for my EEs because without both of her ugly stepsisters, Cinderella's nobody. The truth is that Druscilla was the one who kicked off that naming convention because of her thick black beard. I just had them both in my lap this morning. They were having a spell of perch envy, and my lap was the highest thing they could reach, and it was just so warm on a cold morning. I almost fell asleep with them.

I went to an animal rescue I work with sometimes and asked them for help, and apparently I'm a monster who should never think about being a vet because I'm a heartless, seething sack of expletives. Like me, they think the dog needs an expert or euthanasia (really when it comes down to it), but somehow I'm a monster who deserves to be treed and repeatedly bitten for the crime of taking in a dog who developed some really weird behaviors on being separated from the only he'd ever known. I also deserve to have a lot of blatant threats messaged to me, insinuating not so vaguely that people I don't know know where I live and are going to get in touch with my professional contacts and royally mess up my future and my only real hope of ever climbing out of poverty and being able to afford decent healthcare.

By the way, there is a fence between where the dog is supposed to be (when he's outside; he's an inside dog) and the duck/chicken run but either it wasn't latched particularly well or someone left it open. I have three children who love to go out there and play, so it's anybody's guess. The dog's too rowdy for poultry; chickens are chickens, and kids are kids. I suppose I should be happy that we have so many 'extra' chicks because the dog is apparently going to weed out some of them.

@Indyshent -I really am sorry that it isn't going to work out for you/the dog. Unfortunately a dog with a demonstrated high prey drive the management practices have to be 100% consistent and it sounds like that just isn't possible in your home (ie the fence not always being a sure thing to be closed). The fact that you do have three active, playful children is a concern as well given that you mentioned he likes to go after feet, etc as he is demonstrating his prey drive there as well so it isn't *just* about the birds being at risk. I don't think you are a monster and I actually don't disagree with thinking that if an appropriate situation can't be found that euthanasia is something to consider. I wish you and your pup the very best in moving forward to something that is best for all.

Going to start my search today for the chicks I want to add this year - not feeling too optimistic, but family stuff kept me from being able/willing to commit to placing an order far enough in advance to secure what I want from any of the hatcheries (availability on what I'm wanting isn't working out), so just have to hope I can find 'em retail. If all else fails I guess I'll just have to wait until everybody that has snatched them up to start offering their "extras" as started birds - not entirely a bad thing, lol.
So, if anyone has seen Speckled Sussex or Welsummer in the farm stores I'd love to hear who has at least had some at some point this year (gives me a place to start) - not concerned about finding sex links or Austrolorps (also on my list) as I have seen those just about everywhere, but have struck out on the SS/Welsummer search here in town -- or maybe somebody here has some you're raising that you aren't going to keep all of them?

Martinsville RK had Welsummer, and I snatched up a pair of them. At first, I thought the dog had killed the Welsummer rooster, and I was really upset because he's shaping up to be an excellent bird (great manners, not violent at all, courteous with the gals but still top roo) and I was hoping to breed them next year. Alas, it was the BO, who was exceedingly adorable, gentle and also shaping up to be an excellent rooster (at just five weeks, he was already clucking when he found food to let the girls know where it was). Ask people around Martinsville or, all else fails, go ahead and special order them through RK. They aren't sexed but pullets have darker stripes around their eyes and more distinct triangles on their noggins. Mine are only 7-wks old but my boy's getting some handsome big boy feathers already. I'm excited for him :D

I'd really wanted SS too, but haven't seen any up for grabs when I was able to take any in

I am posting this on the FB page as well:

So, I have finally decided that we cannot keep our Rooster Rico anymore. If you or know of anyone who is looking for a Rooster, let me know. I would like to find him a good home, not just list him on craigslist yet. I will list him soon if I don't find something soon, but I thought I would try here first! This makes me sad, because I have worked really hard with him, and he is my first rooster ever. I can hold him and he is fine...but if I put him down I have to watch my back. He would make a great addition to someones flock who maybe free ranges. He is VERY sweet to his girls, but very protective as well! He is perfectly fine around dogs, cats, ducks, other roosters not trying to mount his ladies. He is not always a meanie, but our younger rooster has proven himself to be a better fit for us.

He is about 1.5 years old. He hatched sometime in December 2013. His dad was a Silver Phoenix, and his mother a Buff Orpington.

Let me know if you have any questions?

Moved 20 (4 diff breeds) out to a grow out pin that I added a small coop to. They were getting a little big for the brooder!
Light brahma
White leghorn
RIR
EE
Hopefully they adjust quickly to outside life

It sounds like the dog will not work out in your home. An expert trainer may be able to work with him but perhaps a home without small furry creatures would be a better fit. Dog people are like chicken people with many varying opinions. You must do what's right for both you & the dog. It took several months, but I was able to train my big mutt to leave the chickens alone. He still enjoys eating a nest of bunnies or any squirrel he can catch, but thankfully our chickens are not on his menu.

We have decided to sell our 2 complete hives & bee equipment. The kids did 4-H beekeeping in 2012. We loved the honey but just didn't enjoy dealing with the bees!

The hives were purchased new and only used from May 2012 - October 2012. We have stored them indoors since that time. Hives were primed & painted with white exterior paint. Our bee equipment includes a bee brush, 3 sets of brown helmet/veil, 1 set white helmet/veil, hive tool, smoker.

Complete hive (2 available) includes:
2 deep supers with frames, 2 shallow supers with frames, inner cover, outer cover, screened bottom board, queen excluder & 5 new shallow frames.

If anyone is interested in any of the equipment or a complete hive, please PM me. I have some pics & will give you prices.

We have now sold everything but the helmet & veil sets -- they're still available!
