Well all of our new babies have been vaccinated... My DH is just a wonderful partner! He always administers the shot part of it while I do the alcohol swabbing and pinching of the skin so he can do it.

I hadn't handled them before that other than snatching out of the bator to brooder. Except a couple handful for photo op!
To my surprise I came across 2 that has 5 toes and one I suspected because it hatched from a light brown egg and had muffs! Yep my good ol' girl Salmon Faverolles that is 5 now is still giving us fertile eggs!! Of course it's a cross because I have no roo but I love hatching her offspring.

Makes me happy!

I am getting a ton of eggs now too well have been for several weeks now and I still don't have my breeds separated! I got a few pens built and housed my bachelors in one to test them out. A few days now and they seem good but still trying to figure out the best way to create access for gathering. Hmmm

Took a pic of the dark eggs I'm getting. Now some are from crosses I have. They are so difficult to get good lighting so not to wash them out too bad. But here's the closest I could get.

Thanks kittydoc for the info. We had a scare of tnat the friday before easter. One of owr chickens died and we could'nt fig out why. She was the fattest heaviest bird we had a e-cropsy done. Turns out she was a meat bird and had a heat attack. Lol I felt dumb.

we are really thinking about going to chickenFest. It's really close to our fav water park and we'd like to take the kids. Just have to check on a few things first. Like if my hubby has to work and if we can bring the dog's or who will watch them. Thou, we are really going to try to make it.

On a different note, its about time to be working on a new design for items for the 2016 chicken fest. I'd like to have at least 7 designs messaged to me by May 22nd. That will give plenty of time for voting and such to pick out a favorite design.
We are also looking for ideas to run 4 quarterly fund raisers for the 2016 Chicken fest. So far the idea list includes a hoodie, a long sleeve shirt, and yet another t-shirt.

Okay, my chicks arrived! Pretty easy to tell the buff silkies and the Salmon Favorelles, but anyone want to guess which kind of Marans I got?

Should be from this list:

Black Copper Marans (chocolate eggers)
White Marans (medium brown eggs)
Golden Cuckoo Marans (medium to dark brown eggs)
Blue Splash Marans (light brown eggs with dark speckles)
Blue Copper Marans (medium brown eggs)

Ok I need some advice or a brainstorm session here today!
I'm really liking the idea of my meat birds. I'm also finding it hard to find them when I need to start another set of them in the brooder.
I would like to keep them in rotation through out the summer/fall. I'm running into problems with the feed stores having them avilable when I need them!!!
First question is. What mixes bred together produce the Corn/cross? I know it's kinda a misleading name but someone somewhere has to know the breeds that produce this great meat bird.
Another question is has anyone produced a fast growing bird similar to this standard breed? Not so much one single chick that hatched out to be a fast muscle building bird but hatched out multiple hatches of meat birds?
I would like to find info on producing my own meat birds to grow for myself!

@racinchickins has a very nice line of bresse, and the finished bird is pretty impressive for a heritage breed in the overall portions. After seeing his finished birds, i do intend to add them here!
Aside from that, I usually try to use Meyer for CX, have had excellent results with them in the meat birds. I have a nice group of 16 BBB turkey going now, at 2 weeks old. They have CX (cornish cross) almost year around so supply isn't an issue. I have bred a CX hen back to a heritage rooster and the chicks hatched. One girl is 2 years old now, and the CX hen is 3 in july. My point is, the offspring is quite large breasted also, just grows a bit slower than CX. I have NOT been able to produce poults from a BB variety turkey yet, but will continue to try!

Speaking of CornX I put mine out in the tractor this afternoon. It's chilly and kinda crapy out but thought hey let's try it for a few hours. Anyone think they are too un feathered yet? I'm not real sure, they seem to be acting ok and loving the fresh grass! Hopefully they do all right. They are around 16/18 days old I think. Should I bring them in at night or will they adjust ok outside?

The rain may affect them if you are getting it. They do looked somewhat feathered, but yes watch close.

Some of the big kids out in the horse field. I'd really prefer to see this instead of rain and hail that I'm getting right now, not to mention the serious flooding.

A question for GOAT PEOPLE

Can the chickens and the goats free range in the same area.... will the goats hurt the chickens or will they be okay together?

I have -0- problems with my goats around any poultry or waterfowl. The larger turkey toms make my oldest doe, Sugar a bit nervous when they are drumming. My Bo, the buck likes to play hide and seek with my guineas! He hides in the livestock trailer, and jumps out at them, scattering them everywhere

The guinea are back 5 minutes later, and they do it all over again its hilarious!

I never noticed Bacon doing this last year, but does anyone know about turkey poults opening their mouths really wide while being held and/or sleepy? All the bronze poults I've picked up this year have done this, and it's kind of distressing. It's like they're yawning, but I haven't noticed any particularly large breaths accompanying this gesture (more like they temporarily stop breathing, if anything).

Yes, they really make a big thing over it, all my turkeys do! If they are content they do it more lol.

Lookie lookie what I found this morning!

It got stuck in a water pan overnight. Almost like it was serving itself up on a platter for the chickens! It's a blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale), I believe. Not the first one of these guys to be rescued from the hens, either!



It was so small! It was carefully relocated to a nice, moist, rotting log in the woods by the creek. I wish we had a good vernal pool that I could have put it near, but the creek's as close as we get to that in our woods.

I get really excited when I find any, they are really rare anymore. Like you, I scoop them up and move them to a safe place. If I remember correctly, they were on the "of concern" list.

You don't have to use an incubator for the HAL... You should have asked, someone would have said...Yes..Set those Eggs!!

Broodys are the best. However mine had 6 babies with her and I've found 2 dead now! I don't know what's going on! 1 was just a week old but always seemed a little off. The other was just 2 days ago and 2 weeks old! I treated her for lice..etc while broody and moved her to a different pen once they hatched and I looked them over and I don't see anything wrong with them. When I find them they appear smooshed but I wasn't sure if they had just been there a bit and over a bit of time being walked on by the others??!!? Sad, only 4 of the Millie Fluer Cochins had hatched and now I'm down to 2! One is growing like a weed and the other is still so tiny but feathering out. Hoping a pair at least! Geez!! Ok enough of my whining!

I found Millies to be a little less hardy as chicks, but thats just been my experience from the few hatches I've done.

I'm going to start raising chickens in my back yard and thought I should see what wisdom I could glean from experienced hoosier chicken people.
I thought I would try and raise an heirloom breed and all hens to get started. City ordinance limits the number of birds to 6 but I'm not sure how many would be good to start with.

Does anyone know of a breeder or supplier of heirloom chickens within an hour or so of Louisville, KY? (Sellersburg is only 10 minutes from Louisville.)

Lovely dark colors! I want to add marans again, but I am going to wait until we have breed coops built. I let mine go when Moms health issues got worse.
