Ugh-- I'm behind again. It's late, but I wanted to at least post a few photos taken this week.

Here's Bonbon ~ Imported English Orpington Bantam Chocolate ~ 2 year old hen


Bonbon and her tiny "chick" (hatching egg from @ellymayRans ). She's a tiny 7 month old Black Cochin Bantam hen who lays tiny eggs. Although she's half the size of a normal bantam, her name is "Screech" for her LOUD greeting. And she's the only chicken I've had so far who loves to be held!!


Here's another one of Bonbon's grown 7 month old "chicks" (hatching eggs from @ellymayRans ). She's a normal sized Bantam Cochin/Black Marans mix = Olive Egger (or something like that!) I'm returning her and her twin sister (not pictured) to ellymayRans one of these days! I'm keeping little Screech, though. On the right is Eliza ~ 1 year old Imported English Orpington Splash. You can't tell by this photo, but she is huge. I love her dark eyes.

For future reference what dosing do you use?

I'd have to double check but 1/4cc topically for bantams and 1/2cc for lf stands out for some reason.

hey everyone..been super busy..hope all is well and easter was great for everyone...hatched out over 100 birds on easter...quail and chickens...and got a pair of purple peafowl...and finished the hoop coop....also laid down some of the two foot sides in the large coops out back....been keeping myself occupied...thats for sure...here are some pics

What do you use to keep the tarp attached so tightly?

I candled my 7 incubating eggs and I am pretty sure only one is viable. The temp and humidity have been perfect. I left them in just to give another couple days. Planning on checking tonight and then tossing. I'm going to check to see if they were even fertile. With 5 different very active Roos, you would think every egg would be fertile, but I know some haven't been.

So I'll have one lone chick (hopefully) come out of this. Then I'll set more.

Am I correct in that humidity needs to be higher and temps a little lower in the last 2-3 days?

Search for 'Float test' on here. It is a good way to make sure you aren't tossing viable eggs.

Also, you are correct that humidity needs to go up, I shoot for 65%-70% but I don't reduce temps.

Picking up my ordered CornX from Rural King after work today. These 25 I'm really going to watch closely for weight gain and feed consumption. My 3 week olds are weighing on avg 1.12# as of yesterday. Is this a good weight for 3 week CornX or are they light/heavy? They look good to me but I'm not an expert.

The Easter Hatch-Along brought a lot of new babies to us!

11 Bielefelders (hatching eggs from @ChickCrazed ), 7F, 4M (2M available for purchase if anyone is interested, either for breeding or eating!)

7 Black/Lav Orpington (half English, half Hinkjc) splits (4 spoken for, 3 available)

5 Lavender Orpingtons (half English, half Hinkjc) (all taken)

5 English Jubilee Orpingtons (if the last egg hatches--looks good now; these may be available, I have to double-check)

1 Barnyard mix, half Lavender Orp and half red wheaten Ameracauna--we just hope it's a pullet. It would be an olive egger, and was incubated at the request of my DH. The chick is ginormous, as big or bigger than my Jubilees, and much bigger than my lavs/black splits. I hope it's a female chick and gets a muff and rose comb from her mama. It's the roundest, blackest chick I have ever seen! Will try to post some photos later. "Her" name is Easter.

We are also expecting our first English BBS (without the splashes) at the end of the month from the three blue hens I purchased recently.

DH has worked like a dog to build two more nice breeding pens for the blues and Bielefelders. They are almost ready, and are bigger than our current pens (1 foot wider for each pen). This is the fourth expansion that we have undertaken on our original coop. Chicken math at work!

I am picking up my first trees of the year on Sunday morning! I will be a planting fool all day Sunday!!!!

I will have 2-3 year old Sugar Maple and White Pine extras if anyone is interested. I can bring them with me to work next week to be picked up in Indy or you can drive up and pick out your own from the 300 I will have!!! $1 each and I will throw in extras!

Apparently yesterday my Buff Orp adopted our babies. She is the one who kept starting to go broody and then the bitter cold spells would break her. Yesterday I had the babes outside is a large wooden brooder (designed for Guineas but works great for chicks - however now I have a great excuse to get Guineas!). They loves being out in the fresh air and I was concerned having them on the muddy swampy ground.

Anyway, our Buff Orp (Punzie short for Rapunzel) hung out on the brooder all afternoon. When the hens went to bed I brought the chicks inside. Punzie has been crying and driving me crazy all day -Pacing on the brooder. It's too cold for the babes to be out today so I took her a couple to see for a little while, and now she is fine. She apparently was worried the babies were gone and just wanted to make sure they were okay.

Just love these funny quirks they have!

Im not sure how many chicks you have, but you could just let her raise them. She will keep them warm enough. Save your power bill too lol. Bring her into the inside brooder with them for a couple days to make sure she truly adopts them, then when it warms up in a few days put them in the outside brooder with her.
