Shipped eggs question for those advanced hatchers:

Which way should I turn my eggs?
After allowing the rolling air cells to settle/ reattach, I now have some very severe saddle shaped air cells. The bubble only rolls from side to side within the saddle - about 1/2 way down the egg. (No rolling from front to back.) I just set the eggs standing inside the cut egg carton, but will not turn them during tonight's incubation. When I do set them in the autoturner, should I go from side to side (direction of the saddlebags where the membrane is loose) or from front to back (where the membrane is tighter - or will this rip away the only good spots)?

Advice?
:

i ordered some eggs and got them shipped the air cells were completely not attached on all thirty..and i let them sit for a day...still did not attach i added them to the incubator and it turned them after that and i had 21 out of 24 hatch and 6 didnt make it thru lockdown....when you candle you will have some saddle shapped air cells during lockdown for sure...but dont worry....as long as they dont freeze and the embryo cyrstalizes you will be good and you should hatch good...only a couple of ways they wont hatch...to cold, to hot, or alot of shaking of the package...hope this helps

oh yea one thing is that on both ends you should use the 3/4 inch pipe foam and zip tie it over the hardware cloth....that way your tarp will last longer...just my thoughts you can do whatever you want...lol

Got my 25 CornX in the brooder! The avg weight was 1.55oz with the heaviest and lightest being 1.80-1.45. I'm going to try and keep daily data on the chicks as they grow out (I'll do my best). Shortly after setting them in the brooder they all took drinks and nibbled a bit then straight under the heat..
And by the way anyone who wants a whole chicken cleaned and bagged please let me know I will put you on our list for birds. You can PM me for details. We are in the Whitley County area (thorn creek township).

Injured chicken...opinions needed...

While checking on my three broody hens just now, I found Farrah with a torn and bloody beak. She is sitting on a clutch of four guinea eggs and one of them has blood all over the shell from where she moved it across the coop to her nest this afternoon.

She has had a long, curved beak for a long time, but I never realized she could get hurt because of it. Now I wish I had clipped it shorter when she was younger. All the other birds rub their beaks, but I guess she never does or doesn't do it right. I don't know how she injured it. Maybe moving that egg, it got caught on something? Maybe in the yard? I have no idea.

Here's what I have done: 1.) sprayed it with Vetericyn. I didn't want to overdo it because she seemed like she was drinking it! 2.) I also trimmed off the side of her top beak that was sticking out like a hangnail. 3.) Did my best to trim/shorten her top beak a bit, but she seemed like she was in pain, so I didn't get much off.

I read the Chicken Chick's article on beak first aid, and I wonder if I should SuperGlue a patch onto her sidebeak. I don't know if that would seal in infection, or if the glue would sting her raw "cuticle," for lack of a better word.

After I let her go, I watched her try to forage for a minute in the yard and she didn't seem to be doing well with it. Then my terrier started to chase her, so she went back to the coop.

Should I do any more first aid for her? What would you do, or what have you done, if you had this in the past?

Should I also leave her some soft food inside the coop tomorrow? They are probably about to sleep for the night. I have chick crumble on hand, so I could give her a bowl.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd give her some milk in a bowl as an option to drink.
About the food, soft food sounded good but if the crumbles get stuck like a grain of sand, that might not be best. Maybe for a day or so scrambled eggs, cheese, pasta or other soft but not grainy foods.

Can you get a picture of her beak? I had a quail that had the top portion of his beak almost totally gone from fighting. Didn't get the boys sorted soon enough and they will literally kill each other fighting! Anyways, it did grow back but took quite a while.I fed him fermented/wet chick feed and he was able to eat.
