INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Finally caught up reading. Work been keeping me busy. I've moved all my adult birds in same coop. All my younger ones in other coop with my month old runner ducks. Starting building new coop to move all chickens in it when done so they have a lot of room to run. Just waiting for concrete to set then move floor on it and finish up floor so I can get walls up. In mean time trying to clear out neglects yard from previous owners. Then repair fence and outside projects done for year. Well put a garden in. Looking forward to chicken fest I'll make the drive.

Wow what a nice day! Got quite a bit done outside and FINALLY got the blrw seperated from the brahmas! So I will finally start being able to offer eggs in several weeks. I still need to get some coops cleaned out but darn wheel on cart was flat and I bought the wrong size replacement tire.

Had a great visit from @irtehun. i had to watch when he left though as I thought his son might have tried to sneak my self blue showgirl roo! The roo was flirting with him and he was eating it up. It was comical!

I have a splash silkie roo if anyone is interested. I received him last fall when I bought out someone's flock. he isn't aggressive but is pretty flighty. Don't know if he would calm down or not.

Made a trip to see @ellymayRans yesterday. I adopted one of the Mille Fleur roos (who is quite a talker and so cute!), got a few chicks, and some Marans hatching eggs. We talked forever! It's so nice getting to talk poultry and not get blank stares or rolling eyes.

Since my first hatch didn't go so well - 6 non-fertile eggs and a double yolker that I know will not fully develop, I am going to work on these eggs. Going to set some in the Brinsea and some in my old styrofoam bator that I have been revamping.

I had work to do today after the storms on Thursday. The wind blew the roofs off both coops and a bunch of stuff ended up down in the creek and out in the fields. All the chickens were fine, so that's all that matters! Since tools will be out this week to make things sturdier, I will probably start working on another coop.

All this and I'm getting over Bronchitis! It's pretty sad that I work in an Urgent Care and I have been more sick than half the people we see!

Wow hope you feel better soon!
Quote: LOL most people that keep chickens for dual purpose don't name them so you don't get attached.
It doesn't help, you still get attached!
Mt Healthy is a sad situation. I did get my australorps from them 2 years ago, all were strong, healthy and ALL GIRLS! No losses and sent an extra pullet. But the repeated reports of salmonella is a bit scary, they had problems last year also. Glad to be at the point of just hatching my own and not buying chicks/eggs anymore.

Quote: Poor lil girl! Fingers crossed, I think she will heal up just fine.

I will have a covered run for my chickens, would I still need to shut the door at night or will they be ok?
I would shut them in.

Quote: Nice, you will love the quail breeder pen. Really easy to clean up and very little waste with the feed tray. Quail love to sling food everywhere

Are you getting more of the breeder pens, or going with something else?

I had a rabbit person link me to these cages. The spraying away of the waste appears to be easier than changing out paper on trays. But they are not cheap and not set up for brooding tiny chicks let alone quail. Still I'm thinking someone on this thread might be able to come up with a way to make a sprayable tray as a DIY project.
