INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I leave feed out free choice, but not in the coop, only the run, and not at night b/c I don't want to attract any pests to the feed! During colder months I feed them 2x a day (well the kids do!) and now it is usually only once a day.
Okay, I am trying to feed my girls fermented feed. I let the feed ferment for 3 days then started feeding to them. My questions are 1. how much feed per chicken per day and 2. how long can I keep the feed in the bucket until it is no longer good. I made it in a five gallon pail and I am wondering if I made too much and it will spoil before they eat it all.

Thank you EllymayRans it's an 8x12 garden shed kit. Of course being the person I am I had to make it difficult and redesign it. It was supposed to be a simply slant roof shed, I redesigned it by adding a barn style roof and added a loft for storage, took off one of the doors so it's a single door now AND added windows n vinyl shutters. It's really nice I'll take pics of inside soon. Again thanks for th compliments.

Well now hearing all that you definitely deserved big Kudos!

I have a question regarding my rooster. Almost every one of my 10 hens have bald red butts. I have looked for parasites, and anything else I can think of. They have been like this for awhile so, I'm thinking this could be from my roo being a little [or a lot] aggressive. Is this at all possible?
jewls ~ @kittydoc is obviously the one with professional advice. Unprofessionally, (lol) I'd say: Sounds like those poor hens need a break from the roo! Keep the roo away so you can see if they improve. In the meantime, google "hens have bald red butts" to see if any other discussions yield possible clues.
To the Huntington County area persons to whom it concerns.

There is currently a petition to amend Huntington County Code to allow backyard chickens.

Please visit the link below, sign it & please share it on your facebook pages. We need to get to 500.

Ed C ~ Thanks for sharing this! It doesn't matter in which county we reside, we love to help others have the opportunity to raise chickens.

@PeacefulWalls ~ I checked out the info on hugelkultur, and it turns out that I've been using that method in two remote areas of my yard and in my neighbor's "nature preserve." I stack the wood up and throw some dirt on top to help the process. Only I haven't purposely grown a garden on top, but maybe I will plant something. I just do it to let it decompose because my chickens sure like earthworms! I'm going to add some yucky leaves from the top of the pool cover to my wood piles to speed things up. I love to mix leaves, sticks, and other organic material into our crummy clay soil. We have tons of sticks, fallen branches from huge oak trees, and trees that fall or have to be cut. One that just fell during a storm had two perfectly round woodpeckers holes. I hope they relocated nearby.
@jchny2000 ~ Hope you got your pigs out of the mud! What a job. lol
@birdman55 ~ Wow! Such beautiful birds you have. Love the peacock photos and your little BR chicks!

I saw these egg cartons at Fresh Market the other day. Trendy and appealing graphic design.

My d'uccles hatching eggs shipped from CA which 17 of 20 went to lockdown started hatching yesterday. Today is day 21 and have 7 hatched so far with 3 others zipping when I left! Great hatch rate so far considering!
Very cool. Did any of your emu eggs hatch? or is it still too early for that?

If by butt you mean the base of their back just above the tail, then yes it is the rooster's doing. If it is elsewhere, then it's not from mating.

Well, I'm just about done hatching for myself for the year. I'm going to start having hatching eggs and babies available. I figured I'd let folks on here know before I advertised elsewhere. Hatching has been going well, and they are popping out like popcorn around here.

I have hatching eggs for:
American Bresse (french heritage meat breed)
Mottled Java (second oldest american breed)
Crested Cream Legbar (now found for sale everywhere it seems, but I'm excited about the quality of my breeders this year)

I also have some chicks/poults:
Midget White turkeys (no hatching eggs as I am in broody purgatory right now)
MIxed variety turkeys - midget white or pencilled palm tom x narragansett/royal palm hen
Bresse
Mottled Java

If anyone is interested, send me a pm.

Y'all, I'm so excited. I bought my own grains last night so I can begin the journey known as mixing my own feed for my flock.

I'm also going to experiment with sprouting and fermenting.

I should be doing the dishes right now (our dishwasher is broken and there is quite a stack), but I really want to mix up grains, instead.
