INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Onto other news. I candled 3 of the first clutch of Peahen eggs last night and I see Notta! Granted they were only on roughly day 5 since I set them in the evening of last Friday. Fellow Pea raiser said its a good chance it's just too early. I have 8 more in another bator that I just set Monday. Only 1 of those are from mine. I haven't gotten another egg since either. I honestly never caught which of my girls it was and I only have seen him mate with one of them so?? Maybe they aren't from her and aren't fertile. The IB Black Shoulder is somewhat new here so perhaps she hasn't warmed up to Ol' boy that much.

I really need to go hunting for nests in the woods better too just to be sure I just can't find time!

With 3 of our boys playing baseball, high school ball and little league our weeks are now filled with multiple games and or practices almost every night. It's really wearing us both down already! Sigh... But the boys love it so what are ya gonna do!? I was lucky to mow the yard finally on my lunch hour+ got some weeds pulled and weedeat. Tasked the teenager with dishes while we were juggling more practices tonight.

Hugs to you, I remember the juggling T ball, softball and minors for 3 kids many years ago. And soccer, and 4H and boy & girl scouts! It wears you thin, but is so fantastic for them to have a social life. Truly builds character in children too, to learn good sportsmanship and fair play.
Quote: Oh my! Poor Tiger! Thank goodness he didn't have damage to his spine.

Great to see @bradselig and @wheezy50 tonight. Miss getting together with fellow chicken lovers!
Want to post a couple reminders:
Be sure to RSVP to @barb s if you intend to attend our chickenfest this year. After careful discussion, at this point we are still holding our annual get together. Chickenfest 2015 will be held in Goshen this year, on June 27th.
As Barb mentioned, we won't be having live bird swaps, but eggs are OK! So now is the time to think about who has the breeds you want!

Our members list:

You can sort by breed, location etc.
Want to be added to the member list? Send me a PM (personal message)

Don't forget to submit graphic entries for our 2016 hoodie to @SallyinIndiana ASAP, and we possibly have other items offered later in the year.

last and most important, I want to say THANK YOU to our contributors that help us keep our thread active, updated and informative.

Last post.. 3 very determined broody geese! 2 Embden, 1 white Chinese. You dare not touch them, it sets off a chain reaction of hissing, and a very angry gander storming in

seriously, I counted 17 eggs under the hens tonight. nest is about 2 1/2 feet in diameter.

So do they share and cover one another's eggs as needed or are they territorial with their own eggs?

Hmmm interesting. It seems that the samples that tested positive for AI in KY were taken 6 weeks ago!
Here's a link to the article http://growinggeorgia.com/features/2015/04/avian-influenza-confirmed-kentucky-theres-twist/

Yikes! Going to read this now!

Quote: They share mothering, goslings, and nests. And the ganders are extremely protective fathers, downright ferocious. Flock ganders bond like flock geese do, its a tightly knit group. No other birds including younger geese are allowed near the hens, let alone the goslings. These are 3 of my 4 oldest girls, they become bonded and it will take a year or so before other hens are mature enough to be "allowed in". Angel for some reason isn't broody this year, found this very strange. She is normally a very good broody mother.

very sweet although I definitely have no desire to be hissed at anytime soon! Lol!

He's small-sized, neutered, and non-agressive. And lucky that it wasn't worse! Tiger was sedated, given pain meds, wound cleaned, a few stitches, antibiotic injection that lasts two weeks (yay!) He is doing well. I did take his cone collar off about an hour after we got home. I felt the stress of it outweighed the benefit of ensuring that he won't pull his stitches out. So far so good. His liquid pain med is easy to give him, so he mostly rests. Eight years ago, Tiger (approx. 6 months old) appeared on our deck one night and was mentored by our old, grouchy senior cat, Tom (now deceased). It was really interesting to see Tom look out for Tiger and teach him things although he always wanted Tiger to keep his distance a few feet away.[/COLOR]
Yikes! That's bad! So glad he's ok! Big hugs!!
