INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So, had a first here today. I was moving chicks around and noticed a black orp had what appeared to be a prolapsed vent. After some investigating, it appeared she was constipated and straining very hard! Never had this issue before. After letting her soak in a warm bath and massaging her belly, she was able to get some of it out. Decided to give her a chicken enema lol. That really got things going. After putting her back in brooder, she just stayed huddled for a little bit. Finally she went over and started eating. I'll check her here in a bit but her vent looks much better already.

Hello! I'm from a little town called Converse, in Grant County! My husband and I have a new flock of 10 hens, 2 cockerels, and 2 ducks. Although we have 25 straight run chicks coming our way soon, as well! Great to see a thread for all of us to connect, as I am sure I will be looking for info about chicken auctions and shows in the near future!

Welcome to you both!!! Please feel free to post any time. We dont just talk chickens either, lol but we do keep things "family clean"

Turns out I am double posting this! I was trying to post this here, but missed the mark! It is posted on the general board as well! HA! Oh well! I have been hovering on this site for several months, watching your beautiful birds survive our very cold winter and learning from all of you! What a treasure trove of information you have been for this newbie! Thank-you for helping us through this past winter and spring! I thought it would be a good idea to finally introduce my gorgeous girls to you and state my future intentions! We got into backyard chicken raising due to my adopted toddler from China eating 2 dozen eggs a week all by herself! I decided that with that kind of appetite for eggs, we might as well raise chickens and have access to that many eggs a week, if not more! On that side of the coin, it has been a success. We acquired a coop and a flock from someone trying to get out of raising chickens. The flock had been severely traumatized and not housed well. We ended up tearing up the coop, building our own, getting rid of over half of the original flock, and buying hatching eggs in November (Thanksgiving to be exact)! Out of our 10 eggs 7 hatched - 3 had significant hatching issues, and one had to be culled (you can see pictures of his malformations on my albums), another little chick got its head stuck in between the lid and the lip of the incubator and died. So, we ended up with 5 total - 2 Light Sussex (the ones who had hatching issues and now live at a friend's home) and 3 gorgeous Lavender Orpington Hens! When those Orps hatched, I was captivated and my interest immediately turned to how can I get some more. This spring I met kittydoc on this forum and she has nicely helped me expand my flock with Black Mix Orps and some more Lavender Orps. We are excited to see some roosters developing! Our intentions are to breed and sell Black and Lavender Orpington hatching eggs and chicks next year. My goal is to go through the NPIP process next spring and make sure we are compliant with the state. We will also be picking up more straight black Orps from a source in Illinois! My husband is requesting an Easter Egger, but we shall see on that one. In the meantime, I learned a bit of a lesson yesterday. One of my pretty lavs was limping and I could see no apparent reason for it. Turns out, I had leg banded them with zip tie number bands. Hers was too tight. Cut it off. Today, she is as good as new. Poor girl. I felt so bad! I have been trying to put in pictures of my pretties, but I cannot seem to get the internet to work today! All my birds are in my albums under my profile! Looking forward to connecting with everyone!
Welcome!

Hi all, catching up on about 150 posts at the moment.

I was stressing bad over this and that (mainly finals), got myself super upset, had a panic attack or two, and I ended up doing the unthinkable--I unsubscribed from this thread! I had to, I needed to concentrate on my exams and not be tempted to check every 2 minutes for new posts.

Today was my final final for the semester, so I'm resubscribed. And if anyone is wondering, I'm fairly sure I did good with the exams.

The results should be in in a few days. I think the professors have until next Tuesday, though, to submit our final scores, so who knows?

So while I'm catching up on posts, I thought I would post on something strange that happened here. Y'all won't believe this, but I was cleaning up my incubator last Sunday and making sure it was still working properly when suddenly 6 eggs from my call duck pair fell right on into it! It was spooky!

Okay, okay, honestly, I lost my battle with temptation. Baby bitty duckies are due around the 29th.

I really needed something to look forward to this summer!

Editing to add, all caught up! Glad to get my Indiana BYCers fix in again.

OH MY Goodness, we can't lose you!

I hope the finals turn out well. Excited for your hatch!

I would really love some! No idea how I can get there to get them. I have bought starts and it never goes well, but they are from the feed store. We have gobs of wild blackberry, but -0- strawberry.

I have had 2 turkey prolapse and 3 comets this year. First time for us too, and its not fun. I was able to save 2 of the comets and so far 1 turkey hen, the second isn't responding well (Puppy the BBW) Seems like hybrid birds have more problems with it. This is the first year I have seen it here, really upsetting. Soaking in warm water, couple drops of dawn dish soap, and Preparation H ointment has helped resolve it .I soak them daily. I follow up with Tylan 50 to prevent infection, 1cc per 10 lbs body weight orally. Be sure to get the syringe past the opening in the tongue to prevent aspirating.
I do a full 5 days of tylan 50 since its obviously so prone to infection, once a day. My poor girl Turkey Puppy just does not seem to be improving

I just want to post a few items concerning bio security for chickenfest.

As per the recommendations of Dr. Geoff Lossie, D.V.M. Resident, Poultry Diagnostic Medicine, Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab.

Unlike previous years, we will not be allowing live birds at the event. We will still allow for hatching eggs, but are asking that they be kept in the vehicles, and all exchanges be done at the vehicles.
And immediately following the exchanges, participants in the exchanges either use hand sanitizer or wash their hands.

We will also be providing shoe covers for everyone to put on before entering the building. We could possibly also be offering a foot bath sanitizing spray to use on shoes.

We are trying to make this as safe as we possibly can for everyones birds/fowl who attend the event.

Other updates concerning chickenfest. The menu for the event will be a Mexican and Hawaiian/Cantonese (Chinese) Haystack. Which is basically a build your own meal. We will be offering Vegetarian, Glutten Free, and Lactose Free items. We will provide Ice Tea, Lemonade, Water and Coffee to drink. If any one wants any other non-alcholic beverage, they will need to bring it.

Sounds WONDERFUL!!!! Its an obvious no brainer that we need to keep live birds out of this years fest. Hopefully the AI will die off with our hot spring. I hope everyone takes a moment to RSVP so we can plan for enough food and fun for everyone attending! Huge thanks to @barb s for her hard work organizing this years Chicken fest!
