INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Just wanted to say if I have hurt or offended anyone I never meant to! I have learned so much from this Indiana chicken family! Everyone has helped me so much from different perspectives:

First the term biosecurity was totally foreign to me a year ago. I have learned proactive steps I can take to help keep my birds healthy

Second I have learned from some of you to not stress if I can't do everything the experts say is best. Like many of you I don't have the finances (or physical abity) to provide covering and or netting over a large enough area. I am hoping my honorary roo (a Giant Schnauzer) who loves his chickens and takes his job as protector very seriously will be enough. After a hawk touched down he chases every critter that is not his chickens away!

We are working towards more cover and turning our garage into a small barn but it will take us all summer!

Everyone on here has so much to offer. I hope we can still offer our opinions with a measure of Grace and kindness toward each other so we can learn, laugh and cry together.

After all the Indiana BYC thread is the best group on here right!

This silly thing sent b4 I was done -something I accidentily do it on my phone all the time!

I'm so heartbroken right now.  My incubator wigged out and cooked 50 eggs that were supposed to go into lockdown on Sunday.  They included a bunch of Bielie eggs I was hatching for myself, some Marans from EllyMayrans and my silkied lavender ameraucaua eggs that I had shipped in. :hit   This was the first hatch of the year for myself.  Now I don't trust my incubator.  Anyone close by interested in setting some eggs for me once I re-group?  I guess I need to figure out a better incubator situation for next year.

Oh no! :( I'm so sorry! I'm going to set a few eggs next Friday if you want to add to. I haven't had great hatch rates though.

Been busy busy here. Trying to get my garden in and figure out a temp fence routine for my cattle. The fence is proving frustrating!!

Hello everyone. Just starting our small family flock on our farm near Arcola, in Allen County. I thought it would be great to find others in my area that I might use as a "Mentor." I love this forum and have learn so much already! Jim

I need a new microwave.

I disagree, and here's why.

When my last microwave broke down (it was leaking radiation and killed my wireless router) I did a lot of product research to try to find the best replacement at a reasonable price. I found out that there aren't any. They are all built for about a three year lifespan. So I looked for alternatives, and I landed on the good old toaster oven. I bought the biggest Kitchenaid model I could find and I've never looked back.

It took a little adjusting for my family to get used to boiling water on the stove for tea (now we actually put the kettle on) but otherwise it's been great. We reheat leftovers without making them soggy or mushy, and we do a fair bit of baking in it, for items that don't need our full size oven.

Oh, and it's built like a tank and should last about 20 years.

;-)

eta I think this is the model I have

Quote: I have tried a few times in the past to avoid using the microwave. The biggest issue I have is my children are addicted to hot milk, hot chocolate, and of all things mac and cheese. I have a bit of patience but toss in a child screaming for heated milk and there is no way I could last till the stove was done heating it. The microwave is a needed item here, if only for the children's milk.

Any ideas on the best and safest way to clear a 2 week old chicks nostrils? I think the thing buried it's head in the fermented feed. I cleared the outer part of the nostrils but I am guessing it has more in there I can't easily get to and probably sniffed some into it's nostrils. That can't be good for it! The whole beak'face'head had a crust of feed on it. I think it probably buried it's head eating and then fell asleep and that gave the feed long enough to dry in the nice hot brooder. It was trying to rub it's beak against stuff to get it off - I just flaked it all off.

I am ultra paranoid about everything right now! We lost 2 chicks - my DD's precious silkie Monday AM and another, a Buckeye, Monday afternoon. Cocci was the culprit. The one Monday afternoon went so fast. Thought we'd lose another when I woke up Tuesday morning, but it bounced back thank God. Got the meds in the water the night before. I did not use Corrid, I used an herbal remedy called Kocci Free. It did the trick! I just started it too late for it to help the first 2 we lost. So Cocci for the first time and AI hitting IN, I feel like I am on high alert and watching every chick so closely. Analyzing poop - my goodness who knew I'd be so concerned with how poop looks!

My latest set of bugs are now shipped and on their way to my mailbox.
With the goats being here all winter, I was fully expecting more flies. So far these little shipped bugs are keeping the flies gone or to a low minimum. My larger duck and teenage chick area still has the most flies of any pen but at least I'm not seeing any large numbers of flies just hanging around the portable pens.
