Haha. Thanks. I've always loved them, hatched some last year, and then let them go because I already had too many projects. I've really found out this year that if I keep mainly bantam breeds, it allows me to have more varieties and projects! Lol. Hopefully I'll be able to offer eggs/chicks later this year and definitely have some available next year.

Just a quick note to say "Hi" from another Hoosier who happens to raise chickens......other farm animals.

These days our chickens are mostly a barnyard mix.  We also have Muscovy ducks mainly for all the bugs they eat.
We added Bourbon Red turkeys about a year ago.  Any advice on hatching turkey eggs would be appreciated.
We also have Dexter cattle and Katahdin sheep.

I've been trying to read the last few pages and look forward to reading more.  

Have you hatched chicken eggs? If so, I hatch turkeys exactly the same except a week longer incubation.

Guys I could cry! DH and I got home from being gone for a couple of days and my momma bird is down to only 3 chicks. I think one of the cats that's been hanging out in the barn got 2 of my CCL girls

My newest goat and her mom. My DH likes her mom the best of all of our moms as she is still small. I'm still in awe that she was able to get pregnant. She's not even a year old now. For those of you with milking goats or cows, how do you recommend straining the milk? I have been using a tea strainer but I just feel like the holes tiny as they are are too large. But coffee filters are too dense. I looked in RK and in TSC over the weekend for anything called milk filters or milk strainers. Both stores had nothing. lots of options for udder balm but no milking supplies, not even udder wipes. I've been using soapy water and baby wipes to wash the milking area but thought if there were actual udder wipes I would use those instead.

I haven't looked into milking supplies because we aren't ready for that adventure yet but the dairy industry uses an iodine solution to wash and sanitize udders before milking. When I worked at the Purdue dairy we would spray with iodine and then just wipe off with a clean wash cloth.

Hi! I am new to BYC and this board (but I read through the last 10- 15 pages so I am a little caught up). My husband and I are hopefully getting our first chickens tomorrow! A friend's mom is giving us some adult chickens to get us started! And it sounds like she may give us some ducks too! I am excited and nervous because I've never done anything like this before. I am especially nervous about the ducks because I have done a decent amount of reading about chickens, but not much about ducks. She just asked yesterday if we wanted some and I figured since they are free why not? But now I need to do some resarch. We don't have a pond so I think we need to get a kiddie pool. Would a little kids turtle sandbox filled with water be deep enough? We also have an old bath tub that we could possibly convert somehow. Or I could go buy a pool. How often do you need to dump and refill? I am also a little worried about AI, wild ducks wouldn't be attracted to a kiddie pool would they? Sorry, thinking out loud here . Anyways a little info about me. I have 3 little kids - 3.5, 1.5 and 6 weeks. (I'm also worried about the kids and chickens not hurting each other. The kids do really well with our cat, but they are still kids and the cat is very tolerant) I live in NE Indiana near Fort Wayne area. I'm trying to convince my husband we should go to chicken fest, we'll see how that goes

Welcome! I've got 3 kiddos close in age to yours. 5, 3 and 6 months. The only problem I've had was a rooster that "flapped" my oldest when he was 3, he didn't stay very long after that. My chickens don't get to be out while my children are in the yard playing and we have a strict no touching chicks unless an adult is with them rule. Mostly I've found my kids are a little nervous around the birds and tend to leave them alone.

Thanks. I did have a couple more but sadly lost them to coccidiosis. First time this year of having it and it was the first time this year I've used pine shavings. I've found the pelleted horse stall bedding to be amazing stuff! Anyways, I had a much better ratio from the hatch. Now I'm curious to see how this next hatch goes.

so the horse bedding is better for brooders....rather then pine shavings...i like sand...how long have you used the horse bedding...and how long does it last...

the show filthy riches im going to look into...cause there is alot of morels up here...anyone would like to chat....wink wink...about some morels just pm me...and we can go from there

Haha. I've done business with them in the past. They wanted more silkies for their customers but we couldn't find it in our schedules to meet up. Thanks to their plug, I sold 10 chickens today!

Ok, I think I have a strange request here, but I'll try it. I would like to find a pattern of a chicken or roo profile that is about 3 to 4 feet tall. I'd like to jigsaw this out of plywood, paint it, and attach it to my hen house! Any suggestions ?
