INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I know have a mixed goat kid. She is adorable. I'll get pictures soon. Her mother needed a tiny bit of assistance and lots of "doula" work all day Friday in the rain, but both mom and baby are doing well.

If anyone is interested in a few weeks I'll have a half Nubian half Oberhasli doe for sell. She comes from good milking lines on the Nubian side and the Oberhasli side. Already her mom has an abundance of milk. Oberhasli are known for their playfulness so this is a wonderful combination for a family with children. the Nubian lines are good at getting fat into their milk for cheese and such.

Here is a good site with basic info on the breeds.

Ohhhhhh! Ice Cream kidded woohoo!

Thats flat awesome news. Can't wait to see the pictures.
Sure wish Gramma Sugar would hurry up, I am convinced she has twins in the oven, lol. Milk is in, has been almost a week now.

My newest goat and her mom. My DH likes her mom the best of all of our moms as she is still small. I'm still in awe that she was able to get pregnant. She's not even a year old now.

For those of you with milking goats or cows, how do you recommend straining the milk? I have been using a tea strainer but I just feel like the holes tiny as they are are too large. But coffee filters are too dense. I looked in RK and in TSC over the weekend for anything called milk filters or milk strainers. Both stores had nothing. lots of options for udder balm but no milking supplies, not even udder wipes. I've been using soapy water and baby wipes to wash the milking area but thought if there were actual udder wipes I would use those instead.

Goodness, she is all grown up! She looks great. Is the doelings ears white?
After I milk I use a linen cloth to strain milk through. I can bleach and re-use it. I have seen actual udder wipes somewhere! I usually spray with warm dawn dish soap and water, wipe down. and use a second warm wet cloth to wipe again. Plan to freeze a couple gallons of goats milk this year to have on hand, its really good starting piglets on to build weight.
So with the three full grown hens can two chicks for free along with their water feeder and lamp. So we went to rural king Saturday to get more chicken feed and couldn't resist getting them some friends. So a minimum of 6 chicks was required so we got 2 barred rock 1 white leghorn 1 light brahma 1 buff orph and 1 black jersey giant. Also 2 ducks a pekin and an Indian runner. The two that were given to us are unknown breed or sex. The rest are pullets.

The red one and the brown with black are the two unknown that were free.

Adorable, and I see the pekin in there too! You will be amazed how fast they grow.

I had tears laughing so hard! This was just too adorable!

Just a quick note to say "Hi" from another Hoosier who happens to raise chickens......other farm animals.

These days our chickens are mostly a barnyard mix. We also have Muscovy ducks mainly for all the bugs they eat.
We added Bourbon Red turkeys about a year ago. Any advice on hatching turkey eggs would be appreciated.
We also have Dexter cattle and Katahdin sheep.

I've been trying to read the last few pages and look forward to reading more.

Welcome, and great to have you join in! I keep scovies also, adore them and Bourbon reds! Turkey are really easy to hatch, its just like hatching chickens just a week longer. Poults are more fragile, drown easily so be sure to put pebbles in the waterers or use a "no drown" type water dish for them. Other than that, they do need a little higher protein, so if you have startina or equal game bird feed, it will give them a good start.
Ok, I think I have a strange request here, but I'll try it. I would like to find a pattern of a chicken or roo profile that is about 3 to 4 feet tall. I'd like to jigsaw this out of plywood, paint it, and attach it to my hen house! Any suggestions ?

If you go to google, just search rooster picture

Here is what I came up with. Now, just figuring out how to blow up the image lol. @hoosiercheetah is a good one for coming up with ideas...

I need help from the masses. One of my Jubilee hens (a little over a year old) is lethargic, sleepy, not moving much, with a high fever (didn't use a thermometer, but her vent just about cooked my finger). No discharges anywhere. No comb discoloration. No visible wounds. Nothing in her crop, nothing I felt in her vent as far as my finger would go except a tiny amount of poop.

I've given her an injection of penicillin, a tepid bath, and am getting ready to give her some subcutaneous fluids.

Thoughts??? I noticed her acting "sleepy" yesterday, but it was nearly bedtime so I didn't think anything of it. Today she had her eyes closed right through DH running the rototiller and the rest of the flock in full freak-out mode, which is when I decided she needed to be brought inside.

All I can think of is symptomatic and supportive care at the moment.

TIA!
Almost sounds like cocci, and with the temp swings and dampness we are all having would not surprise me, even with an adult bird. I had my first run of it this year last week and lost an EE chick. Another off the wall thought is she ate something bad, and caused the reaction like a sour crop. I am so sorry, I know how frustrating this can be.

Your best bet for something big like that is projecting an image onto the wood and tracing it on there. A video projector from an image on your computer, craft stores sell projection units for this kind of thing or you could go really old school if you can get your hands on an old overhead projector!

I love the idea- be sure to share pictures!

You beat me to it! That was the same way I created wall murals in my classroom.

@kittydoc ~I felt kind of like an imposter reading my "Chicken Health for Dummies" book in order to help a veterinarian! lol However, I recognize that veterinarians study a gabillion different species compared to doctors who study humans only. I admire you asking for help because many of our members have had actual experiences to share, which is invaluable information. Anyway, I looked through all possible chicken illnesses/symptoms listed in my book. Tumors are the only type of disease that didn't involve obvious symptoms other than lethargy and fever. That's just a shot in the dark. Hope she bounces back. That has to be so frustrating!

I suggest that you Google: Wooden chicken sign.
If you can't find what you're looking in for, I can help (I'm a graphic designer).

@flyladyrocks Loved chicken shaming! Hahaha

Congrats, ChickCrazed!

2 hatched, the other 2 haven't pipped yet....

The two that hatched came from a blue egg and a brown egg. I think you said the blue egg was an EE, but can't remember what you said the brown egg was. In any case, an olive egg and a blue egg remain--maybe today they'll decide is a good day to hatch?

If you look really closely (at about 5:30 and 6:30 position if you were looking at a clock) you can see the two heads sticking out:

That is a pure Bielie girl from the brown egg! The blue egg is EE/Bielie and the green is Isbar/Bielie. Woohoo! Am I going to get her back?
