I've never had lice problems with my chicks since I brood them in the house away from the adults, but it periodically crops up in my adult birds. I'll find it, treat it and things will be fine for a period of time. Then I'll be working with a chicken for some reason or another and there it is again. I think it returns periodically because although I can treat my chickens and turkeys, I can't treat all the wild birds that love to fly in and out of my barn. I hope you found it and dealt with it in time for your chicks.
One thing that I have found that helps with cocci at my place is that when I clean out my brooders, I don't remove all the bedding and I don't disinfect. I leave a small bit, and I think that allows new chicks to get gradually exposed to the bacteria and whatever that is specific to my farm. This allows them to build up their immunity gradually. I may be totally off on this, but I've raised several hundred chicks, and cocci has never been an issue except with a few that were bought elsewhere and probably had the issue when I bought them.
I do the same gradual exposure with the litter. Studies actually have shown that it helps so I don't think you are off at all! My chicks are inside too so they had to come with the lice. The older chicks were already outside when the littles got here and no lice on anyone else. How do you treat? One silkie I am worried about. She us just infested under her wings and I'm not sure wood ash will be enough. She is way smaller than everyone else now I have an idea why shes growing slow.
Quote: Although some people don't recommend it, I use the sevin spray. For the barn, I spray down the roosts in the morning and the nest boxes in the evening when I know they won't be used for a bit. For the birds themselves (I've only treated adults), they get a spritz on the butt/vent and under each wing once a week until I don't see any more lice in the flock. If you have any roosters, check their neck hackles, they can get them there also.
How hard is it to build and move those little huts of yous? How many comfortably can live in one?
Wish I were closer I would try and take them all. I love those birds. I only have 2 right now, want more!!!! lol BTW is it normal for them to get a black beard?? mine are starting to turn black?I have several LF salmon faverolle pullets available! I am starting to have too many breeds/varieties/projects and need to start cutting. 2 are quite older and outside on grass. The 3 or 4 other are in garage but fully feathered and will be out on grass this week (hopefully). Let me know if anyone is interested. Would like to move fast and price will reflect!

Nub ears.... that is so cute, never seen that mix before... love the cuteness
My newest goat and her mom. My DH likes her mom the best of all of our moms as she is still small. I'm still in awe that she was able to get pregnant. She's not even a year old now.
For those of you with milking goats or cows, how do you recommend straining the milk? I have been using a tea strainer but I just feel like the holes tiny as they are are too large. But coffee filters are too dense. I looked in RK and in TSC over the weekend for anything called milk filters or milk strainers. Both stores had nothing. lots of options for udder balm but no milking supplies, not even udder wipes. I've been using soapy water and baby wipes to wash the milking area but thought if there were actual udder wipes I would use those instead.
yup... Chicken Math strikes again!!!!So with the three full grown hens can two chicks for free along with their water feeder and lamp. So we went to rural king Saturday to get more chicken feed and couldn't resist getting them some friends. So a minimum of 6 chicks was required so we got 2 barred rock 1 white leghorn 1 light brahma 1 buff orph and 1 black jersey giant. Also 2 ducks a pekin and an Indian runner. The two that were given to us are unknown breed or sex. The rest are pullets.
The red one and the brown with black are the two unknown that were free.

Sorry to hear about your chicks.Guys I could cry! DH and I got home from being gone for a couple of days and my momma bird is down to only 3 chicks. I think one of the cats that's been hanging out in the barn got 2 of my CCL girls. @racinchickins do you have any more CCL hatching eggs for sale?![]()
I haven't looked into milking supplies because we aren't ready for that adventure yet but the dairy industry uses an iodine solution to wash and sanitize udders before milking. When I worked at the Purdue dairy we would spray with iodine and then just wipe off with a clean wash cloth.![]()
Welcome! I've got 3 kiddos close in age to yours. 5, 3 and 6 months. The only problem I've had was a rooster that "flapped" my oldest when he was 3, he didn't stay very long after that. My chickens don't get to be out while my children are in the yard playing and we have a strict no touching chicks unless an adult is with them rule. Mostly I've found my kids are a little nervous around the birds and tend to leave them alone.
I find that when it is that close to delivery date ... thats the hardest time... the wait... lolOhhhhhh! Ice Cream kidded woohoo!Thats flat awesome news. Can't wait to see the pictures.![]()
Sure wish Gramma Sugar would hurry up, I am convinced she has twins in the oven, lol. Milk is in, has been almost a week now.
Sorry to hear about your Pee WeeThings are going better after my egg debacle last week. I have had several customers come back and request more chicks and now want roosters as well!!!! LOL nothing says satisfied customer like someone later WANTING a rooster!!!
Equine boot camp started yesterday, I rode three horses after 9 months of no riding. I came through it surprisingly well. They all refrained from attempts on my life. I am sore in some super awkward places today though!
In sad news, my Pee Wee passed yesterday. She never was quite right and I consider it a gift to have had her for a year and a half. RIP sweet girl.

Lol. Yes, admitting we have a problem is the first step. But your biggest problem is that none of the enablers on this forum (myself included) will allow you to believe it is a problem. In fact, they will tempt you with pictures and rapturous descriptions of breeds you've never seen, but now must have. Not that that has ever happened to me....and I've never done that to anyone...oh wait, you have my Bresse now, and I'm saving CCL eggs for another member, and I have Dorkings on order, and Muscovies, and more turkeys ordered too...have I mentioned I have poults for sale?
I have 7 turkey hens, and it's been a week since I've seen one outside even for a minute. They are all broody, haven't gotten an egg in weeks. One thing I am noticing is be careful with too much humidity in your hatcher. I've been keeping an eye on my poults hatching and it seems like with the thicker membrane the poults get stuck earlier and easier than the chicks. Has anyone else noticed this?
I bet it was. Glad to hear he was ok. So how badly did your DD want to kill Dad??? lolI know how you feel. I overdosed one of our rabbits last year and all of his fur fell out. Other than that he was okay and recovered. And this was about a week or so before the fair so my oldest daughter had to show a naked bunny. Very embarassing.
Just need to vent.
I am so sad and frustrated right now. The chicks we got 2 1/2 weeks ago (from an NPIP cert. person) have problems I've never had before and have caused so much stress! First Cocci, then some possible respiratory issues. I thought I saw a bug right after we got them, but it was an instant and could not find it again, so blew it off - must just have been dust. Should not have, they have lice. I did not check all the chicks b/c I never imagined that I would have brand new babies with lice! But they were in a pen in the large shed where all her breeding pens are so they were in the vicinity of and connected with lots of other birds. I am hoping the respiratory issues are stress related from their poor little bodies being overtaxed from Cocci and lice? She said she does bug checks bi-weekly and monthly Ivermectin treatments and has not seen any bugs. But noone else has lice, these babies have only been in their 2 brooders (one LF the other bantam). I realize all these things are issues that happen with chickens, but it is awefully coincidental that I suddenly have all these problems only with these chicks. I spent 2 hours dusting them with wood ash late last night after cleaning the brooders. I'm sure that helped their stress level. She also said she has not had any health issues or had anyone report any.
Wanted to go to processing day @racinchickins
But I won't go now, I don't want to risk the possibility of spreading anything until I am sure everyone is okay.
Welcome to the thread and BYC. So why Redneck Rooster Company??? You raise all roosters?? Just wondering.Rushville Indiana here. Redneck Rooster Company.

Wow... Sorry to start with the 3rd degree..... I'm thinking of building a few of those to use as breeding pens is why ll the questions and since you have them thought you would be the best person to get an op from.

Probably a stupid question, sorry if it is but do you have the affected chicks away from the other chicks? If not you may end up with all of them having issues.
Sorry to hear about your chicks. My grand kids aren't allowed to touch unless one of us are with them either, not that the kids are mean they are just too young to understand how to handle the babies.
I find that when it is that close to delivery date ... thats the hardest time... the wait... lol

shame on you, you enabler you.....

Those "little huts" are easy to build, I run 25 CX in them at a time but I would think 30-35 would be no prob. They move fairly easy without wheels but I installed wheels so my daughter would have no problem moving them.
