INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi everyone, long time since Ive been on. Turkey question for those with turkeys. I have a full time broody and a part time broody. PT broody stays off the nest for about 5 hours a day. FT broody doesn't hardly get off the nest. They share a nest and FT takes all the eggs when PT gets off. Well, they have started hatching today. I have 1 completely dry turkey poult. PT has been off the nest all day today. I know they eggs were laid at different times. Should I let Pt back up with mama and chick so she can finish the eggs? I have 3 more to hatch soon and 4 others about a week out yet. Any help is as always much appreciated!

All my turkey hens are doing the same thing. They seem to co-brood and raise chicks, and for me thats great! My geese are doing it also.

Wanted to share some chicken picture spam with y'all. I was just out with my camera.....

LF buff (10 weeks old) thinking roo

10 week old "splash" pullet

This is Cagney, she has a twin named Lacey, these are partridge I think.

I think this one is black, but not sure, any opinions?

This is Mufasa, King of the Chickens

This is Sarabi, Mufasa's mate. Sadly we lost Nala the third to a predator attack last week.

This is Sparky, my handsome Silky Fella. Love him, he is a big softy.

This is Castle, 1 of the 6 my DD is going to show at the fair this year.

This is Olaf, another of the 6 showbirds. He is very proud of himself.

I need help with this last one. His name is Mork. I think he is a red pyle old english game bantam, but he is 14 weeks old. I thought he would have more color to him by now. Is he something else maybe?

Sorry about all the picture spam, but I can't help it I just love my babies, I mean chickens....

Loved all the pics! OEGB Red Pyle do usually have red on the wings and hackles. He has more the hen coloring right nowm but could change as he matures.

I'm so bored I can't even think of anything to look up on the internet.
Everlasting gobstopper!

Lol. Yes, admitting we have a problem is the first step. But your biggest problem is that none of the enablers on this forum (myself included) will allow you to believe it is a problem. In fact, they will tempt you with pictures and rapturous descriptions of breeds you've never seen, but now must have. Not that that has ever happened to me....and I've never done that to anyone...oh wait, you have my Bresse now, and I'm saving CCL eggs for another member, and I have Dorkings on order, and Muscovies, and more turkeys ordered too...have I mentioned I have poults for sale?

I have 7 turkey hens, and it's been a week since I've seen one outside even for a minute. They are all broody, haven't gotten an egg in weeks. One thing I am noticing is be careful with too much humidity in your hatcher. I've been keeping an eye on my poults hatching and it seems like with the thicker membrane the poults get stuck earlier and easier than the chicks. Has anyone else noticed this?
Good tip about the humidity. We found this to be a problem with the first hatch we had.

All of my Bourbon hens do, it may just depend on the line of birds you have. If they are hatchery, the broodiness has often been bred out of them, unfortunately. I sometimes wish they weren't! I am getting -0- turkey eggs right now out of 5 hens.
This might be the problem. Although, after reading about hogster's turkey hens wanting to set FT and PT and you mentioning yours do the same thing, I think perhaps our turkey hens are normal after all. Well, as normal as they can be. We have found our turkeys to be very different in many ways from other poultry we've had.

Just wondering about you getting -0- eggs............had they been laying or have they not started?

Quick question. Everyone guessed that this girl is a white leghorn which is my guess also. Now I have been getting an egg every day and can tell a definite difference between them some mid brown some super light brown but I don't know who is laying. Or rather I know for sure the RIR and the Wyandotte are laying but have yet to see any white eggs from what I'm assuming is a Leghorn. Could she be something else?

Surely you'll be adding a Scots Dumpy soon...maybe some Manx Rumpies?

...just sayin'

Just need to vent.
I am so sad and frustrated right now. The chicks we got 2 1/2 weeks ago (from an NPIP cert. person) have problems I've never had before and have caused so much stress! First Cocci, then some possible respiratory issues. I thought I saw a bug right after we got them, but it was an instant and could not find it again, so blew it off - must just have been dust. Should not have, they have lice. I did not check all the chicks b/c I never imagined that I would have brand new babies with lice! But they were in a pen in the large shed where all her breeding pens are so they were in the vicinity of and connected with lots of other birds. I am hoping the respiratory issues are stress related from their poor little bodies being overtaxed from Cocci and lice? She said she does bug checks bi-weekly and monthly Ivermectin treatments and has not seen any bugs. But noone else has lice, these babies have only been in their 2 brooders (one LF the other bantam). I realize all these things are issues that happen with chickens, but it is awefully coincidental that I suddenly have all these problems only with these chicks. I spent 2 hours dusting them with wood ash late last night after cleaning the brooders. I'm sure that helped their stress level. She also said she has not had any health issues or had anyone report any.
Sorry to hear about these issues.

The new mom finally left the nest box with the kids. She's been teaching them how to use water nipples and where the food is. One of my favorite things to watch is mama hen teach the chicks.
