INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

About the egg shortage. I got a call this morning. The guy was wanting to buy farm fresh eggs since the store prices for eggs had gone up so much. He was so sure he could save money by buying from me. Right now I'm not selling. But in a few weeks if the shortage gets real bad, I might consider it. Until then I'll just keep using a dozen for scrambled eggs in the morning and a few here and there for baking.

Lol! I checked Meijer when I was at the store last weekend and I need to up my egg prices! Grade A large eggs were as much as I charge for fresh eggs!!

@ellymayRans upon closer inspection (while avoiding momma birds) I have 2 that have dots on their heads :) I can't upload pics anymore but if you'd like to see them PM me your email address and I'll try to send pics that way.

WE HAVE CHICKS!

So far, the broody has once again been faster than the incubator. (Eggs from the same source were set at the same time. Only 1 pip inside incubator & most of Cookie's eggs have hatched.) I cannot tell exactly what hatched yet, but one looks like a silkie. Of course the goal is to find out which has the higher hate rate, so I don't want to mess around with her until all the eggs are done hatching. Tomorrow is supposed to be the hatch day.

It's going to be a crazy assortment: Barnevelders, Marans, LF Cochin, Sebrights, Silkies, Easter Eggers, & Olive Egger. (Basically, I bought whatever was available locally.) Princess Lay-a (who went broody last week) is patiently waiting for her golf balls to hatch. She's even "talking" to them. I'm definitely going to give her a few incubator chicks when they hatch. (Not enough time before the fair to allow her to incubate, so she'll just have to be a foster mom.)

Besides all the chicks, we have monarch butterflies, black swallowtail butterflies, tadpoles, & praying mantises hatching.

Then my preschooler discovered the joy of picking & pitting cherries today. My kitchen is covered in so much red it looks like a horrific crime scene.

Oh well. He's certainly having fun. Looks like a cherry pie will be on the menu tonight. (It's not like I have any other work to do today.)

I'm in a state of confusion and shock but I have 2 eggs hatching and 1 of them is zipping and the end is busted and moving. .the small end. Surely there's not 2 in there!?!? I want to open it but the other is about zipped so I'm just watching for now!

What fun! Great pics and experiences for all!!

I candled my broody Peahens eggs this morning when she got up for a bit and both have already internally pipped !! So excited about those. I didn't separate my Peahen. She's nesting in my front flower bed. I hate she's been in all this rain and storms but she nestled under a small fir tree and most of her stays dry. The Pea egg in the incubator, it's air cell has dipped but not pipped yet. It's not due til 7/4 but I think it may hatch a bit early so I went ahead with lockdown today instead of tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!
Regarding the job, they aren't forcing me to relocate. That is my decision completely! Of course they prefer I relocate or be willing to relocate (which company doesn't!) but definitely not forcing it. I ideally would like to find a place in the country that will still allow me to have chickens. But I also don't want to frantically be trying to find homes for them all should it come down to the last minute and haven't found a place to live and have to settle in town. Plus making less I don't need the added expense of caring for the chickens.
I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know how I missed reading about it yesterday.
Definitely agree with life changes and a move, would be less stress on you to rehome them at your own pace, and not in a mad rush.

How exciting! Can't wait to see the babies! Some bird species definitely do better under a broody.

Not sure what happened but I don't see my last post.

Anyway. Both eggs have hatched and there was only 1 chick in the egg. Lol. Just strange how it was busted on the small end too.
Maybe the powerful chick pushed/kicked very hard with its feet while trying to maneuver & caused the crack at the small end. Maybe a superhero name will be appropriate - like HULK or Hercules.
