INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Black one looks just like my Australorps did at that age. We took to calling them "penguin chicks" because they were about half white. White faces and bellies on all of them. The supposed Jersey Giant was almost all black and only had a little white on her belly.

The buff certainly looks like a Cochin. How many toes does it have?

she has 5 toes

Probably a Faverolle. I've heard of beardless birds coming from the hatcheries this year.

Faverolles, Silkies, Sultans, Houdan and Dorkings are the only ones that are supposed to have five toes. All of them but Dorkings have feathered shanks.

The other option is that she's a really odd Cochin with polydactyly, which is usually from a dominant gene but can arise from several other sources/genes.

I have Salmon Faverolles and I love them. I didn't know there were different types of Faverolles that would be cool, and all those other you named... never heard of them. Except of course Silkies, diffidently know what those are. I take that back I've heard of Dorkins too from here but couldn't spot one if my life depended on it.

Here, let me help you spot some Dorkings. :D

Where did you get your Dorkings?

I was considering them as an old breed ...I gravitate toward the old breeds that are tried and true.

But...I've asked for reviews and they don't get a very good rating. So..."sell" me on the Dorkings.

Here's what someone - who's opinion is usually very accurate - told me:

congrats to all the good hatches and keeping good hatching vibes going to those who still have some to go. I have 30 in a little giant that should be hatching Tuesday

this is my 2nd attempt. The first didn't go so well and out of the 8 that did hatch... all but 2 died. seemed like every day I would lose 1.
Love all the chick pic's and the ducks too, thinking about getting ducks real hard but having a hard time talking DH into it. I have been talking to members and reading up on them and I think we could do it but it all comes down to DH...
Very excited about meeting a couple thread members and doing some bird swapping and getting @Jchny2000 little Doe, probably wont sleep tonight at all lol !!
Next week I have 14 maybe 15 new Silkie chicks coming very excited about that. Now I wont have to worry about breading farther to daughter. I know it is said that its ok, but I just don't want to. Besides I will have new colors. Love little fluffy butts

.

Now I have a mind teaser for ya all I asked before but I think it got lost cause I've got not even 1 reply... or ya all just dont like me anymore.. JK I know how fast this thread moves and how easy it is to miss things.
I have 2 more chicks that we are unsure of their breed. Not that it matters we are keeping them regardless, they are such sweet sweethearts no way they will go anyplace.

the first I think is a Cochin which makes DH VERY happy, the other we have no Ideal. Both are not supposed to be mixed with anything, but we were told wrong on so many chicks this year. They are RK chicks and ya know how the mislabeling is.

They are best buds and go everyplace together. The little black one has white face and black legs in case you cant make it out
Have a great 4th
The black chick, I am betting is an Australorp.

Happy Independence Day everyone!!!! DH and nephew went fishing, my weekend to parent sit. Sooo I spent my free time with my goats today. Walked both my girls, and tethered them the first time since the babies were born. Will upload a few pics shortly.

So here they are! Starting with Bocephus (my buck) cheezing for the camera

Sophie and her doeling

Sugar and twins trying to snatch some scratch I tossed for the chicks

Love her doelings little face, just precious!

Mine are from Meyer Hatchery. I keep my birds solely as pets, so I'm not sure I can sell them as egg-and-meat birds. But, I will give you my honest experience with their production. :) They lay fairly often, at least 4-5 times a week. They aren't super heavy producers and their eggs aren't the biggest, but they do produce large eggs according to my egg scale. They have both taken one or two short breaks to try brooding, but they have been the easiest birds to break in my flock and quit brooding within a few days of being kept off the nest. My girls are not as heavy as the breeder birds, that I'm relatively sure of. They at least don't look as heavy. They are, however, very meaty gals and heavy in comparison to many of my other birds. They are about 14 months old, so my experience is in the pullet stage (well, and 2 months of 'hen-ness').

What sold me on them is their personalities. They are calm and easily handled, have no problems with me working and moving around them. So calm, in fact, that I can pick them both up at once (as in, smush them together and lift) and carry them around if I need to, one under each arm. They are personable and sweet, sometimes just standing at my feet and looking up at me for attention. They would lounge in my lap for hours if I let them, just soaking in all the love they can take. I could go on and on... :love

Anyway, that's probably the best I can do for selling them, short of posting more pictures.

It's true what the first person says, they are really on shaky ground as a breed here in the U.S. There just isn't that much interest in them. :( According to the Livestock Conservancy website, there are fewer than 1000 breeding Dorkings in the entire country, as well as an estimated global population of less than 5000. Another reason why I'd like to get into breeding them in the future--to preserve a breed that is close to my heart. If you couldn't tell, I'm passionate about these birds. :) But I don't expect everyone to love them as much as I do.

Yes I do, SAVE THE DORKINGS!! I kid, I kid. But seriously--

I agree with the Cochin given those heavily feathered thighs and shanks but without a better close up of the others comb, body and shanks I'm not sure.
