INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@bradselig Your cuckoo silkie pullets aren't black barred, are they? So, I guess you decided to take the new job? [rule]@Delawaremommy Good job trying to help the abandoned chickens! [rule]@ChicagoClucker @kittydoc and other Orp fans ~ I took these photos yesterday. I decided to put titles on my photos because the other night when I pulled old orp photos to show ChicagoClucker, I had to figure out dates, how old they were, etc. so I thought this would be easier for my feeble mind. Below: Goofus and Gallant I’ve decided that my duo, Bonbon her hatched chick, Screech are like Highlights magazine’s “Goofus and Gallant”! Screech being Goofus (she copied her bad manners from @ellymayRans ’s Olive Eggers--haha;) ), and Bonbon is like well-behaved Gallant. They still sleep in their own little coop, but are a part of the rest of the flock during the day. When I bring out a plate with treats, Screech will run up first right past the flock leader and jump onto the plate and start eating! Below: These two are "tight as ticks"! When Bonbon was broody the first time, I added Eliza to the flock. Since Bonbon was preoccupied, Adeline and Eliza became fast friends.
Screech is such a nice bodied girl. I love the very rounded cotton ball tail set on the Banty Cochin.

The bump.. is it hard, or feels pliable? It may be a natural deformity, I have seen some pretty weird things hatching. I have a pekin duck with one eye, one ear. Not breeding that one! Peas and poults are so alike I would wait at least 3 days. This babys beak looks very narrow, so it may not be a poult.By the 3rd day, you will clearly see a tiny snood developing.

The lump has a "head" to it. Or somewhat wound spot. So hard to describe really. It is not squishy, I would say more on the hard side of feel to it. I may just take it into the vet this week. I'd hate it to need antibiotics and not get it due to my uneducated guess and lose it. I've never seen anything like it on a person or otherwise and for it to hatch with it worries me. It doesn't look like a deformity. It looks similar to a fatty cyst. Kinda hard core type. ??

Why don't we wait and see when it's dry? It's not colored like any turkey poult I've yet raised, so I'd keep an eye out for an abscess or other health issue, just in case. That said, what color egg did it hatch from?

Here it is during the assist. The egg color is a off white light beige. I've never seen a turkey egg first hand but read people with both sometimes can't tell them apart.

Quote: I would keep this baby separated to be safe, maybe with just a buddy. May be just a cyst, I have had so many odd things in the eggs I hatched. Missing toes, wings, legs but I probably hatched well over 1000 last year! It may just disappear too as this baby matures. Is this the one you assisted?

My Dad always said that he liked to have his first ripe tomato from his garden by July 4th. DH and I were close! This one is a Pink Lady. We only have three plants. That's our garden.

I do, too. Although Screech's "mom" Bonbon is a Banty Orp, she had the same shape until her tail feather pouf was picked! They look they they could be mom and little girl. Screech's feathered legs make her look like she's wearing footed pajamas. Too cute!

I looked in my chicken health book about birth issues, and many things were attributed to an incubator setting being too high-- and I know yours was hatched by a mom. I didn't see anything about cysts or growths on the head.
@chick rookie It's so sweet to see chickens with their best buds!

@jchny2000 Your little doeling is a doll! She has a very compelling expression.

Fossils & Rocks

Thanks for mentioning Falls of the Ohio State Park, but I'm familiar with it and that it's been closed during highway construction.

My sisters live in Louisville, and I've looked around those areas a little, but haven't found much. I'd like to go to an unusual place like an old quarry (where I'd probably be murdered). I guess I shouldn't go alone. lol Anyway, I appreciate your input and if anyone else is interested in fossils --and rocks (besides the ones in my head), please let me know. Thanks!

I see...a thirst for adventure, then, huh?

I looked on FB to see if there are any fossil groups. Didn't find any, but I did find this map and this bit of info.

Good luck and don't get murdered!

A belated Happy 4th of July. I hope everyone got to see some good fireworks last night.
We found a surprise in the incubator yesterday morning. It hatched from the Dominque eggs that were scrambled by the PO. I'm very surprised one hatched. I expected nothing.

Now the hard part. It's supposed to be sexable at hatch. I see a round head spot (female), but maybe a little irreg as well.

I see dark legs (female), but the toes are not. Am I the only one that can hatch sexable birds & still not be able to sex them?

In my experience, dark legs don't happen at hatch but over a period of weeks. I've had lots of chicks with piebald legs, but eventually, one color wins out. All of my Australorps, EEs, Sebrights, and the Giant were like this.
