Right now my coop is not complete. I have eggs in the incubator so I was looking for chicks a little younger. I wish it was built because I would take them. If you have them in a couple weeks after my coop is built, I would definitely be interested .

Jchny- Im very sorry to hear about your FIL. Im praying for him and also that your parents stay healthy while you are gone.

I try to keep in mind that even Indy and Bloomington allow chickens when my idiot neighbors start in. This little neighborhood sits out in the middle of farmland and has about 10 houses combined on 2 little dead end roads. The problem causers are the woman on my right and her father who lives on the other road. They have complained to the county commisioners about everything from my kids make too much noise playing outside to my chickens to the amount of vehicles I own. Each time the commisioners tell them "nothing we can do" yet they still keep trying. These are not big fancy homes either. They are single story ranch homes built in the early 70's. And my chickens dont stink. I keep the coop, run and birds very clean. But I bet they like getting woken up by my roo .

I will ask to be added to the Indiana list and the county thingie. Thanks for such a warm welcome y'all!

Hi everyone! I just happened to find this thread, been posting in other areas for a bit now. I live down in Lawrence County, between Bedford and Mitchell.

I currently have: 5 black sex link hens, 3 white leg horn hens, 1 buff orpington roo in my main coop/run. In my smaller grow-out pen I have 7 barred rock and 5 buff orpington chicks about 4 weeks old. No idea on sexes yet lol. Hoping for lots of pullets. Then in another under- construction pen I have 28 cornish x that look about 2 weeks old. (Rural King in bloomington had a killer sale on them so I grabbed them all lol).

We live out in the county but its a tiny little subdivision. We only have 1/2 acre. Our county has absolutely no zoning and theres no HOA in this neighborhood, but I have very uppity neighbors. The people to the right of me have gone to the county council meetings twice complaining about us and pushing for zoning. They say I should not have chickens because they will eventually stink. Oh, and I have a good size garden. According to them I should not be allowed to garden because of run-off.

Anyway Im looking to get Turkeys after my meaties are done

@BigBirdy ... Just saw that you posted you're in CA. Probably more than an hour drive for me I bet you'll be able to find a good home. Good luck!

You other BYCers, any leads in NE Indiana would be appreciated! I feel like I'm always seeing posts along the lines of "Oh no, my chicken started crowing and I can't keep him!" ... except for now that I'm looking. I really prefer adopting a chicken that is already people-friendly and needs a home, rather than purchase from a breeder. I just love the sound of crowing in the morning and want some male company for my hens. Since my (three) hens are uninjured and my rooster was torn into pieces, my guess is that he died protecting them. I don't know how I didn't hear any commotion ... My dear boyfriend helped me pick up the pieces (literally). It was rough.

I have at least four roosters and don't need any of them, but I'm pretty sure they're not what you're looking for. 1 white Silkie, 1 mille fleur D'Uccle (surprisingly good flock guardian and great with babies), 2 Dark Brahmas. The really good ones went to @jchny2000 and @chickrookie . Jchny2000 has an Australorp and EE from me that I don't think she particularly wants.

The Brahmas are slow to grow up, and I haven't seen what they're like as flock guardians and sex machines. The biggest one doesn't crow or get with the ladies. They're all about 3-4mos of age and none are particularly mature as roos go so I'll likely see more of the Manliness Quotient score as they age. Mag the Mighty (the smaller and closer to breed type of the Dark Brahmas) has started clucking over food, dancing around the feet, crowing around daybreak, and trying to get with the ladies (who beat him up). The D'Uccle crows around daybreak and is very protective over his charges (baby ducks, esp). If he wasn't 1-2lbs, he'd be a great guardian rooster.

You might reconsider a rooster from a breeder. Most of the roosters you "adopt" are from hatcheries, and the way hatcheries breed favors breeding aggressive roosters. Hatcheries stick a very large number of birds in a pen and it is a genetic free for all. That environment favors the most aggressive roosters "winning" the ladies, so the most aggressive traits are passed on. In my experience it is very common for hatchery roosters to become aggressive once they hit puberty, and it is extremely rare for a breeder bird to become aggressive because the breeding is controlled and most breeders won't let an aggressive bird pass on genetically. Just my experience and worth considering! You can generally find really nice roosters in really cool breeds being sold pretty cheaply from breeders as culls that they don't want in their breeding program, but that are too nice to kill. I will have some Mottled Breda and some Bielefelder mix roosters available soon and I think KittyDoc has a really nice Jubilee Orpington rooster that she wants to re-home. He is grown. Others may also have some available.

I second the Jubilee Orpington, but he's significantly more spendy when measured against the tide of Free To Good Homers this time of year, so it's all in the eye (and wallet) of the beholder. That said, he's old enough to know exactly who he is, so it's not the lottery one gets with new chicks and cockerels. He sounds like a great rooster though

May be away from the thread a few days. FIL was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon from a doctors appt..... DH is with MIL now, and surgery will be tomorrow 6am. Very sudden.. I will be going out Friday eve as soon as my nephew gets here, Can't leave my parents home alone.

So can I pick y'alls brains? When I started this little micro-farming venture the plan was to sell my surplus meat, eggs, and veggies. I dont plan on making a mint, just enough to help with feed and seed for our own food. Now I know Indiana law states I can sell my already processed chicken under certain requirements at either my farm or a farmers market. I dont drive and DH is not available to drive me to the farmers market every Saturday. So I would have to sell at my farm. Now my question is how would I go about marketing this? I put an ad on craigslist earlier this summer but I immediately got several very hateful responses so I took the ad down. Also, would I have to register my property as a farm with the state to be legal?

Next question would be selling eggs. According to the director ofy local farmers market, I have to buy an egg license to sell there. Is it the same if I sell them only on my property?


Its really too late in the year this year to start any of this now, but Id like to be all ready to go
next spring. Id really like to have a whole farm-store thing going on. The only internet I have is on my phone so its hard for me to look up most state documents. My phone doesnt like them lol
