INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Having possible emergency with the BBB jake/tom-in-training. He wasn't moving much at all yesterday, just hung out in a corner of the yard, panting. I brought him into the back porch and put a fan on him, gave him ice water (he hasn't drunk any) and some cucumbers (which he did eventually eat). He doesn't seem to be able or desiring to walk and hasn't been vocalizing to the girls (who are really worried about him). Even when allowed off the porch, he won't leave. He isn't drinking. His right leg seems like it may be bothering him but doesn't have any obvious faults. I'm not seeing any injuries, both legs and feet are the same size so there's no swelling, no blood. He can stand but doesn't want to. I'm not sure what's going on, and Google just wants to give me results for Turkey as the country instead of the bird :he

I have Excedrin and Ibruprofen, but no aspirin or straight acetaminophen, though Excedrin has 250mg acetaminophen and 250mg aspirin (it also has 65mg of caffeine/pill).

Seems bumble foot is a common ailment so check the bottoms of his feet. With this heat too I would get him in air conditioning and maybe even a cool bath. ?? Just some ideas but read the links I found. Let us know how he progresses. Best of luck!

Went outside today and Henry my rir roo was limping after closer inspection I noticed his leg was swollen not really sure why... He still goes around the yard crows and everything but I'm worried about the limp any ideas?

There are many possibilities. The two that come to mind are Bumblefoot or a high calcium diet. I have had a rooster eat too much calcium and his legs would swell he could hardly walk. We changed his diet and he started improving. He got enough better that he tried attacking us so off to a new home he went.

Thanks! I am actually glad she is no longer broody. I only have three laying age hens. Now since she took over the only best box the other two have been laying elsewhere I am guessing. So I will be locking them all inside all day tomorrow to see if I can get them back to laying in the best box and adding a few more nest boxes. Scored some free covered cat litter boxes. Perfect for nests.

I lost two half grown hens to a juvenile bald eagle over the weekend and two more to a crafty raccoon one night when I didn't shut the barn door. Found the legs and wings of one raccoon victim last night :(. Now my half grown barred rock hen will not go in the coop at night with the three full grown hens and two half grown hens and two ducks. It's like she has PTSD after the attacks. I haven't had any luck catching her either or finding her for that matter.

Any recommendations or explanations of why suddenly she's doing this? She always hung out with the two half grown hens who got eaten by the raccoon so maybe it is PTSD?

I had one hiding eggs in the corners of the coop, now two more are as well. All of those hens are getting processed by fall. I'm sick of having to pick eggs out of poop and won't eat those eggs. I think mine started in an effort to go broody without me taking their eggs. I still kick them off their "nests" and take the eggs, and they move to another spot to try again. I'm sick of the battle. And I do still have some hens laying in the nest boxes, but more and more seem to be catching the stupidity. It has been months of this!

I am sprinkling birds with the hose. Heat index is just awful, pigs are not liking it at all. I would cool him down for sure, he wont like being sprayed but its better than heat stroke.

She is likely very afraid. Catch her and confine her asap. It will take her about 2 weeks to realize its where she belongs.

I have had some birds down with the heat. I put some water in a pan, cool but not iced, and stand them with their feet in it. Sometimes they will go ahead and lie down in it. I just watch to be sure that the beak stays above water. If they don't start drinking, I'll use a syringe to get it into them. ACV, vitamins with electrolytes, or even a bit of Gatorade in the drinking water.

Glad I saved back some empty water bottles! Floated several of them, half full of ice in all the water buckets. Geese were biting them, goofballs. All the birds and livestock were uncomfortable today. Sprayed my black boar down several times, he just stood still and soaked it in. Weather report says we should see less heat index and cooler temps next few days.
My oldest hen Mabel, a barred rock isn't handling it well. I brought her indoors, bathed her and kept her in the porch tonight. Found a large nest one of the turkeys had stashed, took all her eggs and put them in the bator. half of them were guinea eggs, lol. She is locked up in a crate to break her from broodiness, silly hen went right back on the empty nest.

Update on Trogdor the Tom

He is standing more often but doesn't walk. Preens his belly. Haven't been able as yet to give him a good once over yet but will have to coerce some other adult to hold him so I can wash him off really well. His dark legs don't help to discern where injuries might be, but there's no swelling, discoloration or obvious injury on him anywhere.

He's pooping better (I sound so stupid when I say it. Whole house was remarking on my cheers about his poops last night) and eating more normal food, but still not drinking much. May have to get a syringe full of Gatorade for him whenever I can get shopping (currently no Gatorade!). Trogdor stands up to poop now, which is an improvement. I put towels under him to help with cushioning and the mess, and he seems quite appreciative not to have to lie in his own poo.

Had to go to my parents' house to borrow some aspirin because *somebody* misplaced the cash I did have (trying to assume the best, but my daughter's in that phase right now).
