Sounds like she is improving, great job! Definitely mealworms or an earthworm for treats.
Check out the difference in litter mates! Ok in the center we have a bantam Cochin with blue, black and fayoumi mix chicks! Yes they are the same age.

Huddled on the front porch out of the rain! Lol
Wow no kidding! Mine are under the cars, on the porch, anywhere they can staying out of the rain. Had to bring in 2 WL teenies that were obviously chilled, peeping and huddled on the porch. Ducks and geese think its great, of course!

Oh; One other weird symptom = she frequently makes a weird eating noise with her mouth. The best way I can describe it is like when a hen eats something soft & sloppy - like yogurt. I never saw that in any list of symptoms. It happens almost everytime I offer food. She makes a mouthy tongue noise while quickly open/closing her beak.
Thats strange, have not heard of that either. Maybe there is something stuck under the toungue or in the throat?

Spending time with my Dark Cornish this evening, very calm, interesting birds. They seem small, but super bulky, heavy compact bird. Adore my roosters, the younger fella actually likes his neck rubbed and talks to me. They do NOT like one another, so  may do 2 pens eventually. Cockerel is separated from the rest, but he sits outside the coop all day. Youngest hen is laying now, the older girls are probably still settling in after moving here. Have several new layers starting from the birds I hatched early this spring, lots of cute lil pullet eggs.
My Mallards are settling in well also, and joined the main duck flock today. Soooo tiny, almost like a call duck! Forgot how little they are. Lil drake is a feisty fella, and actually took on the dominant pekin drake, and won! He backed off on my big Muscovy drake, he is older and around 15 pounds. Darkwing the scovy is pretty aggressive so Mr Mallard decided it was a bad idea. Sometimes its like a soap opera around here! :lau
Should see my final hatch of muscovy very soon, both girls are mashed down tight on the nests. This brood I will leave with the mothers, both ladies have earned it, its #3 for both. They will be confined until the teenies are bigger and can move around well tho.
Turkeys are still laying, so I am still incubating until they are done. And I have another goose sitting on a clutch of eggs!

Aw, I was eyeing dark Cornish for a while... ARGH! I need no more temptations! :rant

If you think mallards are small, calls are eensy compared! I didn't realize this until seeing a mallard up close at the zoo over the summer--quite the difference! Even my drake, Malcolm, is probably half the size of an adult female mallard. It's like someone took a mallard and smooshed it down into a round, chubby, rubber ducky. :D

Speaking of, I had Crashie outside for some time in the BIG pool, and she had a blast! Then, when I got her out of the pool and was getting ready to take her in, she was following me around like a lost duckling. :love She was sooo tiny next to the hens! It was too precious!!

LOL....I absolutely dislike when someone asks me "how many chickens do you have"?

I always tell them it started with 8...now I THINK I have about...um...48?  wait...I have three that just hatched under a broody but we sold six hens last week....um...

They usually then interrupt and say "that's a lot of chickens"  :)

Yeah, seriously! 34 is so not a lot of chickens! Some people!

I got flowers for Frou-Frou's memorial garden today! :D I couldn't find blue hydrangeas like I had originally been thinking, but they had this really neat flower called a Platycodon and it's just such a pretty blue-purple that I thought it would go nicely in the mix. Now I'm wishing I had gotten two so that I could have one on each side of her rose bush! I also got these gorgeous little Puschkinia flowers that are white with blue stripes. I saw them and knew they would be perfect! :love And as planned, I got pure white daffodils, as well as some white daffodils with pink centers. I'm so stoked to see these in bloom next year!

And, well, I may or may not be so active this next week. All of my exams apparently lined up next week, so I have a lot of studying to do, as well as two lab reports to write, a German essay to start, an extra credit paper to think about, a video report to start planning, and I think there's something else... But I'm sure I'll remember it eventually. So my homework load kind of caught up with me here. Wish me luck! :)

Bawk, love your pictures!

Pipd, your memorial garden sounds lovely. Good luck with all your exams, etc.!

I have a 2-week old silkie/cochin cross that is lucky to be alive. I have a pen with a trio of silkies and 2 bantam cochins that I haven't put with their rooster yet (their former one died). The two silkie hens and one cochin were sitting on eggs, and hatched 9. When they were about 4 days old, I went out to feed and the other cochin had a chick down and pecking it viciously. Grabbed the chick and thought it wouldn't live--the skin on the side of its head was pulled back and the skull exposed. It was in shock, so I held it and then applied wound powder. When it stopped trembling, I put it in a storage tub with vitamin water and feed--five minutes later, it was business as usual for the chick, as if it never knew it had been injured.

The transparent tub is on my desk, and when I am working, Chicky comes over and stays close to the side. When I hold it, it scrambles up to my shoulder and tries to nestle under my chin--found my earring today and has no trouble remembering where to find it again.

The attacking hen is no longer in the pen--took her out right away. My guess is that she was taking her dust bath and Chicky, being used to multiple mamas, attempted to snuggle up and wasn't welcome. They were in the dust bath corner when I intervened.

Okay, that's the long way around to my question. I can't keep a house chicken and don't have the time to cuddle the baby as often as it needs. At first I considered taking another of the chicks to keep it company, but hated to separate another one from the mamas and was afraid it would peck at Chicky's wound. The wound is almost totally healed now, although bald. If I attempt to reintegrate it with the others, would the mamas and other chicks be likely to accept it or would it be in danger of being hurt again?

Polyvisol without iron (infant vitamin drops) and keep the beak trimmed down. Its hard to treat, I have had one chick over the last 3 years, it lived to about 9 months old. Its more common it seems in EEs and Silkies but can happen in any breed.
I did start her on that, Thought it sure couldn't hurt, She was getting shoved out at feeding times so I took all but 2 of its hatch mates nd put them outside in the "grow-up" brooder, I was going to do that when the rain stopped anyway So no biggy. At least now she can eat in peace, the chick I left in with her don't seem to mind her being different.

I think this must be the most active thread I have ever seen!

I am hoping that someone here can answer a question for me: Do you have to be NPIP certified in order to ship birds? I haven't looked into it yet, but have some rare birds that I would like to sell via FB auction. Am I out of luck if I don't have the certification yet?

Thanks kindly for any helpful advice.

Here is one of the birds I will be offering for sale - his name is Hiho:

You can get behind so far so fast here... lol I love it.
What kind of bird is that??

......and that's how it starts..........and then you 6 becomes 12, becomes 20, becomes "who's counting"
Yeppers that's the way it goes

Thanks for asking. Cuddles Update:

She was slowly declining & stopped eating/drinking.
I had to do something & tube fed some liquids Tues night.
On Wed, I bought baby bird powder mix & gave 20-30cc twice. (Not how I planned to spend my B-day.)
On Thurs, I tube fed 30ccs 3xs. Boy, is she feisty & fighting me! On the plus side, she pooped solid about 4xs. Perhaps the Corid is doing something.
I even took out my microscope & tried my luck at a fecal float. (Unfortunately my 15+ yr old light bulb burned out, so I had to borrow my daughter's.) I found some oval eggs & thin worms. Couldn't see details through the scratched up toy lenses, but I decided to buy a good wormer as soon as I finish the Corid treatment. Instead of "Strike III" I'm thinking liquid Safeguard for goats (Fenbendazole). I'll be near a feed store this weekend.

This morning:
She pooped solid 2x overnight
She's walking around, preening herself, turns her head to me when I say her name, & even pecks at crud on the floor. What she's NOT doing is eating.

My sweet, docile Cuddles is normally very pushy when it comes to treats. (I think its an orp thing!) She's very big & uses her size advantage to get more than her fair share. (That's how I knew something was wrong last Fri. She quietly ate rather than devoured.) Her fav is usually bread & scratch grains.

I tried scrambled eggs, wet crumbles, baby bird food, bread & yogurt. I tried warm, cooked oatmeal this morning- nope. I had a little luck with a grape. She ate about 1/2 - as long as I held it. As soon as I put it down, she walked away.Likewise with a leftover Brown's Chicken biscuit.

I've been letting her out when I'm in the basement on my computer. She's been walking over to the sliding door & staring outside. She also pecks around at the floor. I really wish she'd eat some of the food I offered rather than mystery dirt-crumbs from the floor. The area by the sliding door is where we store our backyard shoes. It's ALWAYS dirty.

She still does occasional head shakes & beak yawns. It's mostly when eating Does anyone have an idea for an irresistible chicken treat? I feel if I can get her to eat, she might pull through the other treatments.

Meanwhile, my son's school called. He caught pink eye. Gotta love Kindergarten!

And guess who decided to go broody again? Yes, little Cookie turned back into "Cookie Monster."

hide.gif
It's not my fault that some orpington & EE eggs ended up in her nest and are being incubated.
I kept my promise about not using the incubators until 2016. Cookie never made such a promise. Honestly, I think she has an incubation addiction. BONUS- I wanted to find out if my roos were doing their job, so I guess I'll have an answer in a few weeks.

So lad to hear she is doing better, mine LOVE LOVE live meal worms.. Good luck on your broody hatch.

Hey chicken people,

I am back! :)

Giving some updates. Soon is time for our sweet legbar roosters to go to their new home with @racinchickins We are going to miss them, they are so tame and friendly at 2 months and a week old.

That leaves us with the following:

Two cream legbar hens, 1 Gold Brabanter rooster, and 2 TP both are roosters, one smooth and one frizzle. Everyone told me the frizzle was a hen but last week I decided it has to be a rooster, the feathers near the neck are more pointy even though they are weird and "her" feet are getting big. He's not hen acting at all and the other rooster we had a short time which ws older didn't challenge him as it did the other little roosters. He acts more hen like, slow and not wild like the others. Low energy acting. First experience with polish.

Okay the chickens are now going outside by themselves and back in too but the polish have to be put and let in. Ugh not fun.

We are thinking of naming the Gold Brabanter "Road Runner" because he is so flighty acting, he runs and flies and it's hard to get him but if we do catch him, he will settle down on my lap and usually takes a nap, doesn't try to get away ...stretches out his neck alongside my arm or draps it over my arm and goes to sleep. It's like he realizes, "Oh they're not trying to eat me, okay, I'll have a nap."

The cream legbars are so soft and sweet and calm, the roosters are the first to come up to us and hop on our laps and they like to eat dried mealy worms from our hands. The Legbars are the only ones which don't have to be caught to hold, they come right up. We don't chase any of our chickens just try to reach under and get them when they are close.

Here's some pictures, some are from a few weeks ago, some more recent in last week or so.

:)

What kind of birds are in the 1st pic? I tried to number the pic's I saw them in also but just too many... lol

I think I myself would be scared to put the chick back with moms while still bald and not haled compleatly, IMO. But!! I am a worry wort I'm told.

My reply:
Ah tried to remove all the messages to respond ... Those two are Tolbunt Polish roosters, one smooth and one frizzle.

The top picture is about 3 weeks before the pictures on down, their crests keep growing. The black one was more friendly but now the crest is blocking his vision more so he has become more skittish. I hope they get along good as they mature. Right now they are friends but the black one is a little spit fire, always n the go and hangs out more with the other chickens. The one with more white does his own thing. He is calmer and when held he is more nervous (trembles) but settles down well. He just goes about his own business more and doesn't stay with the others as well. Pecks and scratches, settles down etc.

Out of the last of the broody batches (hopefully!) I ended up keeping 2 bantam Cochins. 1 smooth and 1 frizzled. Then the 2 silkies from a test hatch. 13 went to their new home last night and oh how happy I am to have just these bitties (inside).
Now that they have this big cage all to themselves they are sleeping in their food dish! Lol! Love chicks!
