O yes I love my deer netting, I put it over my main layer yard and the Silkie yard to keep wild birds from running our feed bill threw the roof, and it worked, and the first time I found the falcon it was caught in the netting cause it was trying to get into the silkie pen, I should have killed it then!! Live and learn.
those would be Awesome... but we would have neighbors calling the cops on us all the time. They are too close, but if we get the place we are hoping to... watch me get some.
one pair of turkeys or a pair of geese would help almost as much as a net. We keep a radio on all the time too. Eagles fly over our place but for the most part I don't lose birds when my turkeys are out free ranging. That said some of my turkeys flew off so that's almost as bad as losing a chicken to a hawk.
Out of the last of the broody batches (hopefully!) I ended up keeping 2 bantam Cochins. 1 smooth and 1 frizzled. Then the 2 silkies from a test hatch. 13 went to their new home last night and oh how happy I am to have just these bitties (inside).
Now that they have this big cage all to themselves they are sleeping in their food dish! Lol! Love chicks!
Wow no one has posted since I last did.... got to be a record.
Yesterday evening we noticed that the Goat kids that Waddles was living with was no longer letting him sleep with them, and was pushing him out of his feed. So we built him his OWN house.I saw a coop on BYC coops ( https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hennsington-palace ) that I thought would be easy and inexpensive to build for breeding pens next year and decided to make one of those for him. It was so simple... and it only took 1 hour to do from Start to finish ( including gathering the lumber screws and tools ) It cost us nothing, $0.00, cause we used scraps from other projects, and left over screws. DH like it so well he said he build me as many of them as I wanted him too....... O he really shouldn't have said that.. lol
Since this one was for a lone meat bird and a rooster at that, we dint hinge the side for egg collection. We didn't have any roofing left so we took a scrap piece of carport tarp and wrapped it in that, all but the front. Right now the front is completely open and we will finish that and put a vent in the back next weekend.
This was so easy I could have done it myself... Dont tell DH that, wouldn't want to bruise his ego.. lol
dont like that he is sleeping in the front, and we had to put a bench in front of it cause he kept trying to get in his old pen.
Sorry that one is on its side, it wouldn't save it when I flipped it, but that is the back.
the white in the inside is where I was cleaning paint off a brush.
I think it is big enough that I can put him a couple hens in with him, but that will have to wait toll I can find some big enough to handle him, was thinking BJG's??
We also put a Rain/Snow flap on the BA's house. Another piece of the same carport tarp.
That can be raised during the day, or I can "tent it" in bad weather in the day time.
I've gone through a few of my roosters and breeding plans for next spring. I will be selling all of my black sumatra roosters and most of my black sumatra hens. If anyone is interested in a breeding trio or quad, please message me. Otherwise I'll be selling the hens on CL and processing the roosters as soon as we can get to it.
That stupid sticking Falcon was back!!!!!!!! It tried to take a BO chick. I chased it down and made it drop the chick but it was too late, she died in my hand as I was taking it back home. This makes the 3rd chick and 2 Silkies and a MFD. I don't care what the LAW says, I see it again ( and I will ) I'm shooting it.
I kept telling DH it was a falcon killing my littles, he believes it now!!! BO is his # 2 pick breed, so he is mad now. I am building a chick pen with a TOP on it!!! I'm thinking chain link with deer netting over that, That ought to stop him.
Ok Sorry for ranting just very highly mad right now.
My guineas killed one small hawk pair last year that was repeatedly attacking my bantams. They were squeezing into my large dog kennels where I had breeding pairs or trios! I opened the shed they were kept in every day thinking they were safe... NO. First time, I caught it in the act and rescued my hen but killed the lil silkie rooster. My guineas nailed it as soon as i let it out of the crate. Then the mate came in and flew into the shed, same day. 16 guineas attacked that hawk, that was it! I can't prevent my birds protecting their own flocks. This is one of the reasons I keep guineas.
After that day I decided it was time to get out of the bantam breeds, for me it just wasn't worth the heartache.
Quote: I don't have any geese yet. Turkeys are as loud as any rooster if not a bit louder. So if a rooster is too loud for your neighbors, then a turkey will be just as loud but with different sounds and more sounds. The puffing up sound is not too loud by any means but it is a fun sound in its own right.

The call a turkey hen makes is somewhat loud I guess.. she says YUP Yup yup pause.. repeatedly til she finds someone to answer. Geese can be loud. If they are, they have a reason to be however! My close neighbor and I both keep them, and its so funny. We hear them sounding and both of us are running outdoors to check whats happening! I am so sorry you have the neighbor situation I would be like you!
I keep geese, turkey and guinea fowl and it handles about 99% of my predator issues. Most of my birds are locked in at night but free range during the day.
My poor sick hen stopped eating completely on Monday. I was tube feeding 2-3xs per day Wed- this morning. She really hated it & was fighting me, but I saw some improvement.. She started clucking & talking back yesterday eve - but still not eating much on her own. (Ate only 2 mealworms last night.)
I tube fed her this morning & we left for the day. As soon as we got home I let her out for her potty break- then boom. (She's still trained & doesn't go inside the house, but I didn't expect her to hold it for 5 hrs!)
Above was tonight.
Below from this morning. Not sure which is better, but I'm glad she's finally eating something.
After taking care of the rest of the flock, I was about to fill a syringe for Cuddles. Before taking out the supplies, I offered her a 1/2 piece of bread. She actually ate it - like the big treat monster I know & love! I shouted to the family that Cuddles was eating & Cuddles started clucking back in response. I went back up to the kitchen to grab some more food & she started calling for me by singing the egg song. I really missed hearing her voice.

I did start her on that, Thought it sure couldn't hurt, She was getting shoved out at feeding times so I took all but 2 of its hatch mates nd put them outside in the "grow-up" brooder, I was going to do that when the rain stopped anyway So no biggy. At least now she can eat in peace, the chick I left in with her don't seem to mind her being different.
You can get behind so far so fast here... lol I love it.
What kind of bird is that??[end quote]
It is an Ayam Cemani with silver phoenix outcrossing. He is a super sweet rooster.
So last 2 days have been sweatshirts, pants, ugh! Downsizing has started here, I am watching closely at my current flocks. Had 2 leghorn teenies I brought back inside yesterday, obviously chilled. Awesome to see @LonelyPageTurne this weekend! We tried the "wax method" for plucking processed ducks and it does work very well. Awesome finished bird, hoping she took pics and can share how well they turned out. PM one of us to discuss.
Still getting turkey eggs but I am setting this last week only. Time to shut down and do a thorough cleanup, put away the brooders until late winter. My DD's lil potbelly pig Marla is in a new home this weekend also, happy for her! She has children that adore her and lots of room to run and play. Intelligent, much like a dog but quieter and soo funny. Wish I had time for pets, I will miss her. Marla is almost 2 and about 100 pounds. Anyone getting a potbelly or teacup pig, really research them, my DDs were taken in by the false info some breeders put out there. I have spoken with someone here that was totally honest on adult sizes of teacup pigs.

I would have put them together also.
Fall coming, everyone is so busy!
Great post! Thanks for sharing.
PM'd you.

As soon as I can I want the poopy butt chick back out with mom but wont if she don't start thriving better then she is.
The only bantams I have anymore is my Silkies, I just cant get rid of them. I love'em.
Once we get out of here I will get some kind of alarm system like you and so many others have.

I have roosters, ( too many at this at ) but so far I have gotten away with it, not sure they can do anything about it if complaint was made, we are in the county. But..... with subdivisions all around me I don't want to push too hard!!! I COULD NOT get rid of " my guys ", I do and get rid of any extras I hatch out or that I get as pullets and they grow out to be cockerels, but to choose and get rid of ALL ... just couldn't do it.
Remember I have the drunk 3 doors down that wants me to train my roosters NOT to crow before 12 noon....

I think I could get away with the noise as long as it wasn't a constant thing. Although guinea I know from my grandmother having them would put the city slicking country dwellers in a tessy. ( no offence meant, no one here falls into that category. ) I should probably just keep my fingers crossed that we get to move the heck out of here.

Quote: lol had to look those up. He is a really neat bird. Just another reason I love this thread.... get to see all kinds of birds I didn't even know existed.
