Quote: Vet bills sure aren't cheap Since I took on my Inlaws lil boston terrier the costs have doubled. We have a little pug/chihuahua mix and they get along so well. FIL is going through cancer treatment. MIL misses her but she wouldn't stay off dads stomach, was really hurting him wanting to be close to him. With 2 small dogs I just don't see getting a puppy next month.

I'm starting to feel like if you have more then just chicken then you better have an awesome schedule at work that works around your farm or your farm is your job
Yes. It takes a lot of work just for the chickens alone. If you add in other poultry, pheasant derived species, waterfowl type birds and live stock.. Its quite a chore. I usually have at least 4 hours of just daily care, aside from hooves, other events and medicines. Each animal species needs a different program of care, and feed to ensure they are thriving.. That's just all part of keeping poultry or livestock.
I have spent the night in my goats house a few times kidding, and our livestock trailer trying to save calves. I have sure had my share of shrink wrapped hatches. Its all in how much you have time for. Don't take on more animals than you can house and feed. Its asking for sick animals and personal distress.

Quote: I so agree. I do it because my family benefits from it and my parents health has shown major improvement.

Quote: Don't believe everything you hear, so not kidding. Its online, just look up any question you have via Google. what local farmers get in grants or federal funds. Its pretty amazing if you know, personally what they do compared to what the government helps with. I know a beef cattle farmer north of me that I am amazed he does so well. Cows are not cheap. Social animals are so much more important in a small setting and I will gladly pay for it.
From the smallest quail to the largest cow, I want social, imprinted animals. That's what I look for, and I will pay the cost to obtain them.
Quote: Our family has 3 generations of farming. Have to agree... thanks for posting this.

Quote: UGH! waferboard, osb whatever falls apart when it gets wet. I am so sorry.
You betcha, @pbirdhaven I want a farm just like my grandparents had. Its a "bucket list" thing and makes me feel closer to them. Its also been a goal for most of my life.

Quote: It may be the most reasonable answer. I will pm you about satrurday.

Aw bummer, hope your shed isn't too hard to fix. Hope your dog is okay.

The shed has been a big disappointment from the floor on... It said 10 x 8 so we built a 10 x 8 floor ... Wrong!!!! it's 7 1/4 x 10 so we have floor sticking out, the instructions Suck!! The roof was a mess cause it rained and washed the numbers off it so that was not fun... DH wouldn't let me do the floor the way I still think it should have been done!! And he is about to find out, cause he will be fixing that floor before he knows it. As for the leaking roof!!!! We got some clear sealer that was not cheep, but it better work!! got it on today.
CJ is feeling much better this morning, she actually went down the steps to get outside on her own and we both got to sleep last night. Vet said she would be fine I'm just a worry wort and gave me better pain pills for her.

Try the spray on sealent
See above... lol

I have never met a farmer that can fish all day. I actually don't think they make all that much money considering they are out in the fields all manner of hours working. According to the USDA, 90% of a farm family's income typically comes from off farm income. Most of the farmers I know have day jobs, that is why you see the combines out in the fields so late at night. The spread of GMO crops are helping improve yields and financial return for farmers, but the seed market is stagnant at the moment and the entire industry is struggling. Also, keep in mind that land and equipment is so expensive that most farm families are mortgaged to the hilt. Most farmers came from farming families and take pride in what they do, they do not do it for the money.
Me either and I know a few. They put in long, HARD hours and get very little in return money wise. The big money farmers are the ones thaat own 1/2 the farm ground in town and know how to save money.

Thats a bummer!!!

Got some pic's last night. After sealing the roof ( I hope ) I made some temporary perches and moved the kids in. I added to the EE/AM flock. I put the BCM, FBM and the splash Maren will go in when she gets bigger, Trying to get some OE's next year. I put ( not so sweet ) Sweet Pea in with them cause she really aint accepted in the layer flock. and who knows maybe I can get some really big EE out of that pairing?? With feathered legs??? I put Harriet and Shania ( my 2 loners ) in there, and of course Harriet's sister. Hoping to get feather legged EE out of those 2 also.

The pile up in the corner... have no ideal what is going on there?? and the wood leaning against the wall in the back is the floor part of the nesting boxes yet to be made.

Harriet just wants mom to let her out... poor baby, I hope they let her stay, its new to all of them so hoping it will work.

Hi everyone! I havent been on this board forever, life got incredibly busy here.

Ive built myself two incubators and have been hatching chicks like crazy. It started out as an experiment just to see if I could do it and I kept going because it was so fun and who can resist chicks lol. BUT I have more than I need now and hubby is about to have a conniption so if anyone would like some chicks pm me. Nothing fancy, just some buff orps and then some mixes. Some hatched this week, some are older. I also have a buff orpington roo just starting to crow that will be going to freezer camp this weekend unless someone wants him. All the eggs I hatched came from my own birds, so the parents can be seen. Remember though, I am down south of Bedford. Its quite a drive for some of you. I'll probably end up having to take some of them to the auction just to stay out of divorce court :). I have one more set due to hatch on Thanksgiving and thats it for the year.

In other news, hubby finally let me get pigs! I have a breeding pair, and they are still babies. Im hoping to find one more, a couple dairy goats, and some turkey babies by spring.

I hope you all have a great day and stay warm!
