I'm using my iPad, which doesn't work well with this site, so I'm hoping my post works.
Quote: Ugh.. am still awake and stressing over this. I have read several opinions and statements on what happens once a farm is AI positive. Large operations especially, its upset me enough I won't even post the outcome and management of the AI outbreak. I honestly don't know either, verified truth of how its managed. I do know all living birds are destroyed. What a devastating loss to even think about it happening. I am not a vet, but I would sure be saving those survivors to find a stable functioning vaccine! That's just common sense in a disease outbreak this severe.
If it would ever happen here, I don't know that I could even consider keeping birds or waterfowl again. That much mourning and loss would be too hard for me to consider rebuilding my flocks. My EE and Orps, Geese, and Muscovys especially, the birds of those species I am really emotionally attached to. I do recall @kittydoc mentioned there's a vaccine in the works, but this is a different strain than last year.

If anyone out there is questioning the use of a rooster in their flock (which is not to say that anyone here is, just if there is someone...), this is it right here. This is my Silkie rooster, Reuben, standing out on this frigid cold day, all alone, so that he can keep his eyes on the sky and make sure his girls are safe. Love my Reuby-Roo.![]()
I also want to add my sincere condolences to both M2H and Fivewire for their losses.![]()
And how sick I am for all the farms losing birds to HPAI again.![]()
What a difficult time it's been...
Cool! That sounds like a bargain!Reuby-Roo What a great gentleman.
If anyone needs to rehome roosters this year, for $5 I'll grant them a yard to free range in and live a great life. The $5 would cover a bit of their food. And they could help me with the remainder of the composting that needs to be done here.
