INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote:
I saw obvious improvement in 3 days with the Denaguard. I have tried just about everything out there this did the job. Since I only have a few laying right now eggs were tossed. We are working off our frozen eggs right now, glad I did it last summer. Most of my seasonal flocks are not laying yet aside from one brown chinese goose, and the waterfowl weren't medicated.
Lesson learned for me, anything that comes in no matter where it came from gets quarantined. Life events may change flock management in another farms flock... so many other factors, its just the safest way to prevent issues in your existing home flocks. Quarantine is easier than medicating and dealing with losses of valuable and loved birds.

I am new here and from south of Indianapolis.

Welcome! Im waaayyy south of Indy myself lol.

Dashkan- Congrats on the baby! Hope she and mommy are doing well.

Amwchickin- hoping, hoping, hoping your flock is spared!!! I thought about you when I heard of the negative chicken flock being put down as well. Both counties bordering mine to the south and west are under quarantine now and im pretty close to the west county line. Your new chicks are adorable though!

Does anyone have any duck hatching eggs for sale? Im asking for my friend although they will be living here lol. At least for now. She mentioned specifically she would like Rouen or Peking, although Im sure she would be happy with other breeds. I dont know enough about ducks to offer an opinion on breeds, but I suppose I need to learn huh? Hope everyone stays warm and safe tonight!

Quote: I have kept so many duck breeds, and have settled on Muscovy and Mallards. Mine are not laying yet but will be soon, they don't lay in the hard winter months. I will probably add pekin in the spring again so around march will be getting ducklings. The 2 breeds are less "messy" with mud and water than other duck breeds, and more social IMO. Please invite your friend to our thread! I have really sorted through duck breeds the last 4 years, and feel the quieter breeds, more productive and less messy are the 2 breeds I have chosen are exactly that. Mallard hens are a bit noisier than you would expect for the size but lay well seasonally. Muscovy are flat awesome and social, very quiet. The big question is are they dual purpose, or eggs, or meat only..or pets.

I wondered if ducks even laid in winter lol. See this friend lives in a rental in town with absolutely no yard. She has the most adorable little girl. Anyway she has been hatching a few chicks here and there from my eggs and we house them here so they can have their own fresh eggs and meat. While she was candling her eggs the other night her little girl kept asking which one the duckies were in lol. So she wants to hatch a few ducks as pets for her baby. BUT if we are going to mess with ducks then I might as well get a few myself and I would want a dual purpose type. But I also do have neighbors close by. Their pond would have to be a kiddie pool or two that im sure i will have to clean out every few days lol.

Im pretty sure she lurks here because she has texted me links from byc before lol.

Our little farm is always keeping a dual purpose animal only. From our cow down to the quail. Every animal I keep has 2 reasons at least to be here! Whether it is friends and eggs, up to meat and milk, many offer 3 reasons, or 4 even I keep them here. All the critters are #1 a friend, a pet and know this is home. Any other reason is second to being respected and treated as a pet. I respect them most for what they give our family and love every one of the critters I keep, and they know it. I also mourn any losses, some are hard to accept but I know the reality of the breed thats passed away. I have a big mixed egg flock but know every bird thats here. I also have specific breeds that stay in breeding coops, these have impressed me most. Its been a hard winter already to say goodbye to a few poultry flock members we adored. My point is we love the critters we keep. We thank them for what they give our family in return.

Your philosophy is an inspiration, which makes you an excellent leader of our Indiana flock!
So sad to hear about your pet turkey, Vermie!

She was a special girl.

I can relate to the shock of the unexpected death and the mourning of its BFF/sister. Very heartbreaking!

Personally, I go through shock, grief, beating myself up, more grief, and finally good memories. I cope by feeling like I gave a chicken a good life, and her death ultimately left an opening for a new lucky chicken to join my flock.

I can't believe that after you've talked to the neighbors about the loose dog, they haven't taken responsibility! That poor dog has dumb owners.
Your story about Crash and her adventures as a house duck would make a great children's book (you can add that to your "To Do" list haha)
