We do need to update our welcome but here is at least the most Important information about our thread. @Mother2Hens and I plan to update this very soon, we have added new contributors and some folks are no longer active. Hi all I'm from Cicero Ind. and I'm new to the chicken business but I am so excited I have 5 hens and 2 roosters i got my hens last summer and finally one of my barred rocks went broody her first day of sitting was Feb 3rd. She had 12 eggs under her from the other hen laying in the same box I had to move her to the brooder with her eggs. I candled them this Sunday all but 3 were good i don't know what happened to the 3 that were bad but the boys and I are so excited for the hatch which should be Feb 24. Does it always take 21 days? or could it be shorter or longer we cant wait too much longer lol.

I think another one is going broody she sat in a nest box all day long on 4 eggs and when I went to close up my coop she was roosting with the others. this is exactly how the first one done and after doing this for a few days here and there the last time she wouldn't budge not even for treats so I thought i would leave the eggs and see if she would sit on them and she has done a great job so far. I absolutely love my chickens so the more the merrier

We've had some very cold nights, so perhaps your hen just couldn't cover all the eggs well in the cold. My bantam orp run a little hot & tends to hatch her chicks on day 19. Because it's cold, you may actually find that that this batch takes a little longer. It's not a big deal because the hen does all the work. No worries. She'll know just what to do. Try to avoid messing with the hen when hatching day comes. You'll hear peeping but may not see them for a day or 2.

Yes. Your other hen is thinking about going broody. Perhaps the 1st broody triggered her hormones. Once the hen stops roosting with her friends & has a full broody scream, then you'll know she's serious. As far as the eggs, it's a good idea to mark them with a Sharpie so you'll know if new ones are being added. You don't want a staggered hatch.

Bacon & Egg Cups

Ingredients:

• 5 slices bacon
• 5 eggs

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2. Wrap a strip of bacon around the diameter of a muffin tin, laying the end of the strip at the bottom of the tin.
3. Crack an egg into the tin. Be careful to not break the yolk.
4. Season with salt and pepper and repeat the steps for as many as you want.
5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes for a fully cooked egg.

Had a few surprise hatches a little early, but it looks like more bitties on the way. Both were from blue eggs, so I should have some more green layers soon

Going to put the 'bator away for a few months after these next few are done because I still have to get pens made and separations done for those rainbow Wyandottes and sex-linked Brahmas. (if I get around to it at all this year, that is)

Been a trip this week. We've had a pipe bust in half, I was briefly stuck under the house, the kids discovered some hidden matches and set fire to some blankets, plus I've got wall-to-wall exams and a crapton of calculus homework, and a Powerpoint presentation to do on the Oracle of Delphi (as it pertains to scientific writing through the ages) to do. All I want to do is curl into a ball and cry myself to sleep, pretty much. Just too sick and tired for this stuff right now.

Yes, she is still here! I named her Charlie.

I had actually been referring to the Red Goldens because I don't have to have a permit (and inspection) for them. I'm worried any government official would condemn my house if I asked them to inspect my coop.

BTW, I haven't seen any regulations that would say I can't keep pheasants with chickens. Anybody got impressions one way or the other on that? Nice thing (depending on how close you and your friend are), we could just say the extras from your place were at your friends (legal permits and such). How loud are pheasants, anyway? I've never heard the ringnecks, so maybe I was just never around in their noisy season. Supposedly Goldens are pretty quiet (and tiny, which is a plus with my feed bill), and ringnecks are the loudest. How mad would they make the neighbors?
