I am curious to find out what recipes you all like to make when you have an abundance of eggs? Egg salad? Yellow cake? Angel food cake? Deviled eggs?

All the above and I do also donate to schools, parks for hatching programs. We have a food bank in town I will also donaie to if I get too buried in eggs.

Question for my hatching friends:

My midget white hen has started laying, Yay for that! I found her first 2 eggs today, one in the corner of the coop and one was laid outside. I know that they were both laid in the last 2 days, I was in both of these spots Saturday evening and there were no eggs. So, I'm confident they are freshly laid, the only problem is the one outside. It sat in the rain all day today until I found them a few mins ago. Will the one laid outside still hatch? I didn't know if the protective bloom will be washed off from the rain or not?

Anyone hatched any eggs that were left outside in the rain??

Yes, if there is mud, rinse quickly and keep cool until you set eggs. I would set them pretty soon though, with the bloom gone the egg degrades a lot faster.

Oh, and the second part of my question, should the eggs not be hatched if I just wormed all my poultry?

I gave them Strike III, (Hygromycin B) which is mixed into their food. One pack was to be mixed with 50lbs of normal food. It will probably take my flock one week to finish all the food on their feeder, they started on Saturday. The package said to wait 3 days to butcher (which I'm not) but didn't mention how long to discard eggs.

So I don't plan to eat or sell any eggs for the next 3 weeks or so. I didn't know if there was a problem with hatching eggs while they are on the wormer?

Any experience here?

Not with that wormer, let me do some looking..It doesn't have any warnings regarding hatching the eggs that I could find.

Didn't get the entire thing wrapped. Need some more lumber to build out the door and finish the dividing wall. Also shorted myself on gable trim. Still, made good progress working by myself again today. Starting to come together.

Looking awesome and I just love the red barn look!

Indy Rezone Update-


So, got this e-mail below today about meeting to help draft the livestock license. Spread the word - I am not on facebook or other social media, so feel free to spread the word there. I realize it said "this is an invitation", but I am extending the invite and don't really care what they think! My hubby will be there, but Thurs. are REALLY busy for me, so I don't know if I can swing it.

If you are unable to attend since it is the middle of a workday, I suggest you contact your counselor (you can find who that is here: http://maps.indy.gov/GovProfile/) as well as the Metropolitan And Economic Development committee and let them know how unhappy you are about the fact that it is smack dab in the middle of a workday. (editing to add that comittee link: http://www.indy.gov/eGov/Council/Committees/Pages/metro.aspx)

(In case you can't tell I am a little fed up with this madness of pretending they care about our input) I am going to contact @Mother2Hens and see if she (in all her technical genius!) can help me get the draft of the license on here (it is a in PDF form and when I try to copy it, the formatting gets all messed up!)

You are receiving this email because you have shown interest in urban agriculture zoning in Indianapolis and we are looking for your help to complete the urban livestock component of the code. The final phase is upon us for implementing the new zoning code that passed late last year. This email is an invitation to be part of the final review team for the “Urban Livestock License” which was added to the zoning after public input during Indy Rezone. If you are still interested and able to attend, we hope you can join myself and senior city planners John Neal and Tammara Tracey to help create an appropriate and workable license and review process that will expand the flexibility of our urban agriculture zoning code.

We will meet on Thursday, March 24 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Purdue Extension – Marion County Board Room on the Indiana State Fairgrounds (map attached). Please review the attached draft of the urban livestock license in its latest form before the meeting. The intent of our meeting is to discuss your comments on the license and help craft a revised version. This revised version will then be shared more widely (e.g. posted on the city website) to draw a broader public response. Based on the response to the “public” draft we would either continue to refine it or prepare it for introduction to the legislative process. Had a heart attack tonight closing in my chickens! Went to close them in and as I was doing head count I saw a HUUUUUGGGEEE rat run across the coop and dove under the nest boxes!!!! Called for my outdoor cats and threw 2 of them in the coop while I ran inside for my fiancé. Woke him up wanting to know what to do. Told me to set the small live trap up inside the coop near the boxes and hopefully I catch it. So that's what I did after it took me 15 mins to get the dang cage to corporate with me then putting the bait inside and putting it in the coop. Praying I catch the nasty thing!!!!

Both of my Rouens and the one Khaki turned out to be girls, but I can't get girl Runners and Pekins to save my life. Wound up rehoming all of my ducks and have so far been successful in avoiding waterfowl... but Indy Rezone has me looking back into soon-to-be-banned birds. I'm tempted to get every currently-legal animal on the property just to give a rude gesture to the, but I know most of the soon-to-be-banneds won't work out here anyway. Doesn't mean dwarf goats, pheasants, geese, guineas, peafowl, turkeys, emu, etc aren't awesome... or that I'm any less tempted to borrow some for March 31. As is, I'm pretty darned interested in acquiring geese and seeing if they work out as pets here.

So pretty. I used to know how to quilt and use a sewing machine. Sewing machines may as well be particle accelerators now, though.

Genetics sex-link question:

I hatched out what I guessed was a Biele egg. I chose wrong, so

Barred roo (Bielefelder) x Black hen (black sex-link) = ???
I have always used a barred female x solid male to make sex-links. Will this combo work in reverse.? The chick looks black with a faint head spot, but isn't dry yet.

Eww, yes trap. They will chew on adult chickens and eat chicks. canned cat food is a really good choice, oreo cookies, marshmallows.

Busy day again tomorrow. @Indyshent please don't make the drive up, I will be gone all day. Moms Dialysis Fistula is plugged and she is due for bloodwork.
Lost a young goose hen this morning, she HAD to scale the fence to get out. DH found her hit by a car around 5am.. I am just sick over it.. My geese have never got out of the pen at night. now we've lost 2 in a week

.I rarely loose a goose, for any reason. More eager than ever to move them to our pasture. Appears to be the younger goose hens getting out.
7 eggs from my Sumatras coop, wow! They are becoming my best layers for the chicken breeds.
