INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thought some of you might be interested in looking through this article (and maybe even the video) regarding antibiotic use in livestock.

Always makes me glad I have my own and/or know folks that I can buy meat from that raise their animals without routine drug input, outdoors on healthy land (also without chemical input) with species-appropriate feed.

@chick rookie they are just in a potted tree in the house to get a pic. Lol...i have to put rock in them or the birds scratch all the dirt out when i put them out on the deck during the warmer months.
Thats a great ideal... why didn't I think of that?? I stopped putting plants outside because the birds would not leave them alone.

Like the idea!
What a bummer! Similar case when I moved, only it was winter, snowy, and they couldn't get out, so I had to pay for two places for a month.

We are going to have to pay for 2 places too.... with everything we have to move we figure it will take us 2 months to get it done. The new place has no fences and no usable buildings. So we have to build what we cant take from here. and that means lots of work. DH works 14 - 16 hour days so will only be able to work on it on weekends. We need to get started asap or it will be winter before we get out of here.... lol

Electric wire will keep pigs in that have been trained to respect it. If they've never hit a wire before, their first instinct will be to charge right through it. They are also masters of figuring out when the electric is out and then escaping. I plan on using electric netting for pasturing pigs this summer, but they will get their first training on it while they are still inside a pen with a strong outer fence
Good to know DH is talking about getting a couple feeder pigs.

Hi everyone, I'm new here, first post!

I am just getting started on my chicken adventure, and am looking for hens in Northwest Indiana/Chicago/SW Michigan. Any leads or suggestions would be appreciated!

I will be building a coop this weekend and will hopefully post pictures. Happy Friday!

Hi nice to meet ya.

I could give him a really good quality splash laced Wyandotte and a BLRW roo... but I might have M.g. Purdue has been ultra-slow about sending that egg carton this way. The rooster was sick when he came to me, but the hen has never shown any symptoms of being ill whatsoever. She's a wonderful, wonderful bird. LonelyPageTurne has the BLRW hen that came with the splash-laced one, but it'll probably require some arm-jerking to get that one away from her (because she's one of the most beautiful hens on the planet. Her sheer presence is a bane against evil and hopelessness in a one-yard radius).

Also, I was thinking of you when I saw those Pomeranian geese

Seems like a pretty fair price for such lovely, rare goslings. I've seen goslings shoot up to $60+ before, so it seemed like a pretty good deal.

And another thing, while I'm at it, addressed to absolutely no one in particular, please, please, please pray for our family. I've got all the symptoms now and have had one positive pregnancy test, followed by two negative ones (cheapo off-brand poorly reviewed ones that came in a two-pack). My husband had a vasectomy eight years ago, we have three kids already, I'm a sophomore in college, and I've had an ectopic pregnancy before (very nearly killed me), so, needless to say, this has all been really unexpected for us. Husband has also been pretty well assured that he'll be losing his job in about a month. We have no idea what God has in store for us, and it's completely nerve-racking. If I'm not pregnant, it's probably something much worse, so I'd much rather be pregnant and have to endure stares from disbelievers than have some weird cancer or cyst or whatever.
Good luck, will keep you in our prayers.

Looks like those negatives might be maybes after all. Tried again this morning, but I'm going to save the last test for some other time (like next week or later). I'm so tired of feeling crummy and not knowing why. This is so weird.

Really hoping you're ok! All very overwhelming feeling I'm sure!!

Hey everyone, I have a friend looking for BLRW and a peahen. Any leads I can forward to him? I am trying to get him on the thread also ;)

If he isn't in a hurry, the animal swap at Milton KY on Mother's Day weekend usually has peafowl. I've seen several reputable breeders there. Milton is just across the river from Madison, generally a really nice swap, and KY has lifted their ban on poultry sales. Also might check the breeder's list at peafowl.org.

Whine time--first area show at Lima OH this weekend. Had paid my entry fees and hotel (non refundable); then was down with a bug all week. Did well to feed and water, no chance of getting any birds ready. :barnie

Nope, test from this morning looks like just as much of a super faint line as the other four now. Lines do have color to them, so they're not just evaporation lines. Husband isn't taking the faint lines seriously, so we're going to have to test again after another week or so. I'm not sure what we can do about it if I am pregnant again, anyway, but having a baby is better than having cancer and anything else that can cause these sorts of symptoms. I'm already enrolled for completely necessary classes this summer, but I'm going to have to look into how a pregnancy might be affected by chemistry labs. A lady stopped coming to labs because of becoming pregnant early last year.

Really hoping she was just being super-protective, because I've never heard of a ban on pregnant ladies in labs. If I can't take labs, I'm screwed out of a degree at this point. As is, if I'm having another baby, I may have to figure out what I can do to be four-years-and-done instead of doing PhD, post-doc, DVM, etc. I'm already so old to be in college.

Plus, I have a yard full of undiagnosed chickens who are carrying something back and forth, so nobody wants them. Wave done so much work on the shed, but weather just isn't cooperating. Wish we'd known about possible Baby #4 before committing so much money to this cause.

Shocking, but the silkie egg that i accidentally dropped the bator lid on and caused a good sized bust, just hatched. Thought for sure it wouldn't make it. That was last week..

They can survive a lot!! After all, I got THIS from an egg that dropped to the sidetable the incubator was sitting on, bounced, and fell to the floor. Hence the name, Crash!

:love Leapy is adorable!!

Weathers been great, have really got a lot of projects done this week. Looks like a short cold snap and back to sunshine next week! I noticed my snowy mallards are laying, got the first eggs today! Will be setting them.

I'm loving this weather! Makes it so hard to get homework done, though! I got my first egg from my adult call hen yesterday, too. I hadn't been checking, though, so it could have been laid within a few days before then as well... Oops!

Btw, does anyone know how long we should wait to eat eggs after the chickens stop having Tylan antibiotic in their water?—that they probably didn't even drink!

The only recorded withdrawal time is one day, but that is for meat birds. I don't know if it is the same for eggs. I believe when I've used Tylan in the past, I've gone with a 10 day withdrawal to be safe, but that was before I had read about the one-day withdrawal for meat birds...

(Whoops, I killed your colored text! :hide )

Aw, that stinks! I think I had that same bug a few weeks ago, really takes it out of you. :/

They are discovering their wings now! Bennie looks like a little jet plane in this picture!

Marka cooperates so well with everything, even being held while having pictures taken!
