Okay so i am a woman of my nearly 40 that enjoy/LOVE my farm life, yet love being very nearly a woman in the old fashioned sense, so here I am, enjoying Pearl Jam... My "old man" haha already too much for him and once again outlasting him!!
Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty are two of my favorite movies. I swing from gratuitous violence to romance--at the other end, I love Last of the Mohicans and Legends of the Fall. Go figure!
Thanks! I found a couple BBW to keep the one company for now, and may be getting some midget whites soon. But if you find yourself with a few extra bourbons after your orders are filled, ID love to have a few . I'm falling in love with turkeys now lol.
Got my Peas moved into the new coop tonight. its 8x8x8 so my poor fella has room for that tail, and they both have more room to move. Adding hardware cloth on the outside yet, but at least they have a higher roost and a lot more space. I added a nesting area for the hen, we worked well after dark.
The coop they were in is getting repairs, and the Muscovys move into it tomorrow. hoping to get the other 2 finished tomorrow also.
Its my goal to get to the point I fill feeders and waterers a couple times a week. Still collect eggs daily, but we are really trying to simplify and streamline our chores. Looking into automatic waterers/nipples for my pigs to cut the mud some, ugh. I fill the water trough several times a day. My Boar, Oreo thinks he needs 4 inches of mud at all times! I no sooner fill it and he dumps it.
What a goofball. We add grass clippings, pine needles and leaves, hay etc to the hog pen often, and scrape out several times a year for the compost pile.
Not sure how an auto watering system can work on tractor coops, we are brainstorming it too.Be a lot of quick disconnects! We plan to add another hydrant dedicated to the animals water supply only. Any waterfowl will have to have buckets, no way around that. They have to be able to dunk those heads.
Been busy again! I'm helping a client who is sponsoring the K9 demos this weekend at the Home Show. I asked the officers if there was any info that I should know about how to act around their dogs, and they said, "No, but just don't run or scream!" Haha After their demos, kids could come up and pet the beautiful dogs. Tomorrow, we'll have two different officers and their dogs.
I designed this vintage/worn look Tshirt for my client, and we gave them away to the audiences.
When I returned home, my five hens helped me in the flower bed.

Oh how fun! I was an attack dummy often for K9 officer training, it was scary but fun stuff too! The 13 years I did it, only one dog actually "got me" he bit really high up. That's when I quit. My shoulder was bit pretty good after the practice. Most dogs come after a target much lower and that's how the bite suits are designed.
Your flock looks so happy!
Ok friends, I need help. Predator attacks never cease here apparently. This morning, my first day off in 7 days, and I let chickens of all ages out of their pens and coops to get a little free range time. I am in my kitchen when I start hearing a ruckus. Roxy, the furchild, starts going crazy and I grab the .22 and run out the door barefoot. Two foxes are tearing into my flock. I shoot and they run, but I notice a young cockerel is dead and one of my last Silkies is gone. The rest of the young ones made it to safety. I go looking for the big kids now and I'm still hearing squaking. I go over to the woods and a fox has my line Ayam Cemani, I shoot, it lets her go and runs. This poor girl. She is the one that had feathers ripped out by the landlord's dog and flew in the house. She must be made of something tough because there isn't a scratch on her that I can see. I found a white leghorn's feather pile, so that's another loss. The other white leghorn is in the woods and I get her to go back into the coop. Next I see my lone Marans rooster dead. And then I have a BLRW and splash Sumatra unaccounted for. I am PRAYING that they are hidden somewhere and will come out later.
We have been doing so good since I put up the fence and installed the door. The one day I'm home and this happens right under my nose. So after a jaunt through the woods and locking everyone back up, sitting on the patio with the .22 in hopes that the foxes come back, it starts raining. I brought my lone Silkie inside for today...put some food and water out for it and let it get acquainted with the living room. "It" turns out to be a he! He started crowing, ok, well, trying...pretty rusty at this point. This is the Silkie that when the hatching day was here and it was the first one out, my DF was over and had accidentally flipped the light switch, which turned off the incubator. When I went to check hatching progress and noticed everything was cold, turned things back on and held this baby in front of a heater and rubbed it back to life. (3 others out of 7 had made it) so this little guy is special.
The help I am asking for is if anyone Indy or lower has any Silkies - doesn't matter what color or quality - available, and doesn't matter the age. He is already confused and lonely, calling out for his friends. I am off all weekend and can meet wherever. I am definitely willing to pay for birds, but don't want to break the bank. I assure whoever has them, that I will take good care of them. I already have a plan of action for the Silkie coop to be more secure. Thanks and I will check in later!
*also cross posting on Facebook BYC for any available Silkies.
@amwchickin Oh my gosh—you poor thing—and your poor flock!
That just isn't fair. Too bad there aren't rules for predators like, "No hunting during daylight!" I noticed on your signature that you have three dogs besides your faithful Roxy. Can they go outside to patrol when the chickens are out? Or have two outside and then rotate them with the other two so they can take breaks? (You can tell I've been with Police Dogs today!)
@jchny2000 You were brave to be an attack dummy for K9 dogs! I'm sure you already know this, but I hadn't really thought about this before...The officers explained that when the dogs attack, it's not that they want to kill the suspect or think the suspect is evil, etc.—it's more like a game in regard to being trained how to play the game/learn the required lesson. When the dogs are trained to search for drugs, they use tennis balls that smell like specific drugs. When they have to search for drugs in a real situation, they are actually searching and hoping to find a tennis ball! Ha—interesting.
Awww—I love him. I miss my Cochin girls!
@pginsber ~ I have been meaning to check on you since you hadn't posted for a while, and you're a regular…I didn't know you were jet setting —thanks for sharing your photos of Germany!
I recently had relatives from Berlin visiting, and I also have relatives in the Bavarian area. Btw, did you have to find a Chicken Daycare while you were gone? lol
@kittydoc ~ Thanks for the cat food tip! I will try 4Health brand. I know that your scientific-based recommendation beats my method of selection. I bought this one (above) because I liked the arty packaging.
My three cats did not like it.
I bought this one because a young saleswoman took the time to discuss some of the products, and she recommended this one. I don't really like the artwork although it does include a few chickens! My cats loved it when I mixed some in with their usual, less expensive food—Purina Naturals. I like the illustration on the bag!
