i've had to cull a roo & a few chicks the past week or so - its never easy, but they would never have the quality of life they deserve

Cuddles. The BEST chicken in the world to me.

She died in my arms a few moments ago. Sadness beyond words....

Oh no, I am so sorry. Please send a hug to the children too, I know they loved her.

Well said. Its the hardest part of being a responsible chicken keeper.

I was actually wondering how typical this is, since I'm still so new. It makes me really anxious about letting my new chicks out to free range....I've been checking the coop again and again to make it as safe as possible.

Sorry you had to cull some chicks. I'm sure that's never easy. Since we started with chickens, I've had people comment on when it comes time to process our extra cockerels. Everyone jokingly assumes I'll have DH do it, but I never intended on it. I'm scared to death of it, but it's important to me that I can follow through. I wanted eggs yes...but I also want to be part of where our meat comes from from start to finish, so I can truly appreciate the life given for the meal eaten. Heaven help me that day....
