INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

News from the urban homestead:

The biggest of the three little Bielies has passed away. No injuries. He disappeared a couple days ago, and I found his body yesterday. Not sure how he died, but I found him when I started moving stuff around the backyard. Think he may have died of heat when a plastic tote blew over him, and he couldn't get out from under it. It's the only thing that makes even the slightest sense.

Princess the BBW is definitely a jake. His feet have exploded in size (and the rest of him is catching up fast)! Boy's already passing up Major Tom as the big man on campus. He waited to show off his manly true colors until right after I named him. "Ta-da! I'm a boy, mom!" Looks like our boy will probably be Thanksgiving, too. After all the pain @jchny2000 and I have been through with BB turkeys, I don't want to wait until he needs to be put out of his misery to put him down. He's a sweet boy and loves us (for the moment, before those manly hormones may get the better of his darling nature) as much as a turkey can possibly love people (which is much more than non-turkey-owners can possibly understand), but the breed is just too tragic to make him linger in misery much past slaughtering age. I hope he makes it to Thanksgiving, frankly. Of course, I may wind up keeping him til Christmas... We all know me when it comes to putting off the inevitable with turkeys.

Little heritage bronze Pancake, my youngest's poult, looks to be a girl, and while she'd always been healthy until now, she's suffered a sinus blockage on one side this week. Looked like a feather had gotten stuck in her nose, but even taking it out didn't fully relieve the pressure and let her eat normally. We gave up nasal sprays and did the needlework yesterday. Injected saline into the cavity to loosen the goop, sucked out the goop, injected half a cc of Tylan 50 into it. Pressure is down a bit, eye's slear, and she's finally eating again!

Good to hear about the ramp!

On the goats, what kind of housing is adequate for 2 large goats for winter when they can't get out to run around?
Just a 3 sided windbreak, bedded with hay. Roof to prevent snow and rain. How old are they now?
My goats like the platform Dad built, it keeps them off the ground. about a foot off the floor of the shed, and a 4x8 sleeping area. Cocoa has chewed most of the platform tho it was chipboard. use plywood if you do a platform for the goats to sleep on.

Hi! Fellow hoosier here! Does anyone in the northern half of Indiana have any young pullets for sale (prefer 4-6 months old) that are Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandottes, or Cockoo Maran? I am having a heck of a time finding pullets within an hour's drive me. The only source I have is Craigslist and half the time the sellers do not even respond.

I am really considering getting out of turkeys altogether. Love the strut and gobbles. My hens stay broody several months out of the year. I still have a quad, the 3 hens are glued to the nest. All are healthy but geez I really need some poults. All I have is the one bronze my WL hen hatched.
We are going to take the 4 eggs tomorrow and candle. Usually my bourbons lay pretty late in the fall.

How'd taking the eggs go?

Have you tried pulling broodies out of the enclosure and doing the usual "broody breaking" stuff with them? Or giving chicken/duck/goose eggs to hatch? I've heard locking girls up alone in a dark environment will break broodiness. Turkey farms move the ladies around in weird environments to help break--changing substrates, isolating from the flock, increasing length and strength of "daylight". Your girls are comfy enough and have stuff to sit on in a dark little corner. Blast 'em with light, I guess.

Poor frustrated tom

I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing (chicken wise and online group stuff as all of my posts have been half payed or not at all! So probably doing better in the chicken arena I guess?) Anyway from IN our live here now and wanted to say hi!? Is that allowed? Thanks!

Hi and welcome to BYC. Yes your allowed to say hi and always encouraged to do so. It takes a while to get used to this forum but you will get the hang of it. Where in Indiana are you located. As you see on the map in my avitar I'm right across the river from Louisville, kY.
