It is SO frustrating when the birds are mean and one (or more) ends up getting the short end of the stick. When I've had that I sometimes just feel like doing something drastic. There have been a couple of occasions that I've rehomed a bird to a different flock and that has brought peace for the others.

I've been away for a long time. Took me awhile to get caught up on all the posts and lovely pictures. I have a few new birds myself, along with a new home and a fresh start. Hopw to stay up with everyone again and all the posts. Here are some of my babies.

Just finished raking out the goat pen. They just use it as their "home base" for water and if we need to confine them for any reason. Otherwise it's open to the woods. We put wood chips on the ground in the goat pen too. It keeps smell down and we can use the composting manure under for garden when the time comes.

Broken record again.... I get the chips from a tree service. We have them dump loads for the chickens runs and animal bedding. Keeps the chicken run soil healthy and keeps them from becoming unhealthy, packed soil that becomes a vector for disease.

LOVE WOOD CHIPS! (Especially free wood chips!)

These guys have done a great job on the woods this year as brush goats.









A pile of free chips (I have room for lots but you can ask for a small load if you don't have the space for a large one.)

Two Buckeye Boys are using the chicken shed until they're large enough to process. They're still available for anyone that wants a flock rooster before we process...you can let me know.

These Buckeyes are the most friendly, peace-loving breed I've ever had!

You can see the tarps I put up on the side toward the main flock. Can't wait to take them down after the boys are done with the little house as it's quite an "eye sore"!

I actually think "Whoopsie" is the most beautiful. I like the light sandy color that fades to gray with all the "flowered" accents. Her hats adds a touch of class to her SFH elegance. She's a beautiful bird.

Thanks, @Faraday40 . I had originally not wanted crested birds due to a couple of issues but the ability to see to free-range is one of them.

This girl's crest is not excessive and she does just fine. One of the girls (Tilly) that @pipdzipdnreadytogo took of mine was the result of a "crested to crested" breeding. Her crest is HUGE. I literally had to clip her crest so that she could see.

I have 2 Silver Appenzeller Spitzhauben eggs under a broody right now. I can't wait to see what a Spitz x Orpington will look like. (Our only roos are orps) Can you imagine a big, round orp body with a mohawk? Should I call my mixes Appington Orphaubens or maybe Orpenzeller Sptizingtons?

BTW- Spitzhaubens are excellent foragers with unobstructed vision, fast reflexes, & good flyers. We kept the darker one with the short crest & recently sold the lighter one. So far, we're getting an egg a day. (She's our only white layer, so it's not difficult to identify her eggs.) The pullet eggs are still small, so I'll have to let you know what I think about my Spitz in a few more months.

Aw, Whoopsie-Daisy sounds like a sweetie! Your SFHs are gorgeous, Leahs mom! If it's not prying, why is it that you're considering selling them?

Tilde's got a crest with a vengeance, I swear. Every time I trim it, she molts it back in. Her 'mohawk look' from the last time I trimmed her lasted longer than usual, almost 3 months! Usually I get 2 months at best before it starts looking like it needs a trim. Right now she's going through her fall molt, so I'm not sure if I should trim her again or wait until she's done for good measure.



Faraday, I love those Appenzellers! They're so amusing with their moehawks!
