INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Whooohooooo! your babies are just a few behind mine! They hatched Monday and we got them in the mail yesterday morning. We settled ours into the basement in a feed trough though, I was concerned about the temperatures here. I want to wait until later spring to intro them to my other ladies.

@Indyshent how many chicks did you put out?

I put three turkey poults out. The oldest hatched on Thanksgiving; the other two are a week or so behind him. Thinking two toms and one hen so far (turkeys can be tricky--Thanksgiving play "mates" the other two, but seems to be feathering out like a girl, just to illustrate). Thanksgiving is red bronze; the younger brother is blue red bronze, and the youngest jenny is Bourbon Red (by current appearances). Had them out with two 125 heat lamps and a heating pad. Covered coop bottom of "their side" (I have a wall in the middle of the coop to separate the all-purpose people side/front door vestibule/quarantine/brooder area from where the big kids live) in PDZ for dust-bathing and will add more wood chips later today. Introducing them to fermented feed also. They wanted lots of cuddles this morning when I went out, so I'll have to go out again later and cuddle them some more. They're adjusting well, I'm just worried about them getting too cold because the little ones are so much smaller than Thanksgiving, but Thanksgiving is waaayy too big to be crammed in the brooder.
I have a buckeye rooster for rehoming. He is a wonderful rooster as far as rooster jobs go but he absolutely HATES ME and only me but I am the one that does the outside work and chicken chores. He does not bother with anyone else here, the mail folks, my kidswhen they visit, the neighbkrs...only me! He is beautiful and very brave against the hawks that often try to visit. I wuld love for him to have a home to defend but it cannot be here. Interested parties us pick up in peru indiana. He truly is a great boy, I feel he only hates me bc the hens love me so much and he sees me as direct competition.
Pm if interested...
Flip him over and carry his spunky butt around in front of his girls. Don't take crap off a rooster ever. He can be rehabilitated quickly; you just need to put the effort in and stop letting him get by with this kind of stunt. He views you as competition, so you need to prove that you are the biggest, baddest thing in the yard. You can get another rooster to keep him busy or you can put him back in his place. If you give him to someone else, he'll possibly pull the same crap with the new owner (might get worse, might get better). I don't feel comfortable ever handing out roosters that show behavioral problems, but it's your call obviously.

Because of my recent concussion, I won't be able to come get him, but if you would rather someone else train him, I can still do that. Just don't ask me to drive anywhere. I've never failed to train a rooster, and I've never had one go back to his awful ways after giving a reformed roo to someone else. So far, the record for times I've had to flip and carry a roo is 3, and that was set by a BLRW roo last year. The hardest part is catching him, and for that, you can employ a net or bedsheet for help, but chasing him all over the yard in front of his ladies will generally put a lot more fear of God into him. Best of luck

Ooo.... pins and needles. Just put the babies outside in their brooder under heatlamps and with a heatpad still, but they are officially in the coop now. Hoping they're fine overnight.

Good decision to do it this week. 60s this weekend.

He would work ok here. I am trying to arrange it. Since I know the line he came from, I can add him to the RIR flock I have. Hang in there, we will figure something out. That rooster is a very promising Sire to a project flock.

Chickens are loving this warmer weather, even with all the rain. I got a few eggs today! Also noticed my geese and the pekin have decided its spring. Busy fellas, lots of breeding in all the puddles and our pond. Have a few roosters that will be leaving for freezer camp or new homes.
My goats will be kidding by May, and am hopeful for calves by September. Ready for spring and so tired of all the mud!

(UMMM this was a reply to a post about dogs a few pages ago. OOPS

We already had a husky boxer mix when we got the chickens. He is overly interested around the rabbit we kept for our older daughter for a week, so we were unsure how he would do with the chicks. He and our old dog used to share the kennel and yard, but we brought them both inside one very cold winter, mostly for the old fella, who died the next fall. This boy is beta dog, so he is just the best dog, other than the occasional flight of fancy during potty breaks... I still take him out without a leash, because, well, I am the boss and he usually listens to me and my husband. ha ha

Anyway, we divided the yard before putting the chickens out there to stay. We didn't have him out there with them at first, then we put him in his side when they were out. He got used to them.

My husband nearly freaked out, when I let him out of the house while the chickens were allowed to wander outside their fence. The dog kept his distance, because he seems to understand that they are not food or toys. Now, he will walk right up to them, and he doesn't care, and they don't care, because they get attention, but they don't get to come in and sit on the couch.

I wouldn't leave him to babysit on his own, but gradual training paid off. No need to scold, and we tried to respect that he was getting used to the divided yard as well. He refused to go into his side for a while, but that is now where he can be outside if we're not paying attention and where he poops, so he heads right to the new gate, when he needs to do that.

I do think that he has showed signs of noting when they are getting toward the "exits", so maybe he will eventually be able to help, but he is not a shepherd dog, so I am not going to count on it. Best he might do is let me know somehow. I am just glad he has not shown any aggression toward them.

As you can see, he thinks he is "people".

...and he really likes twizzlers, to the point of using his robot eye for mind control...

He only got a small piece.

We have been getting two eggs a day from our relative newbie layers (2 eggs from 3 chickens)... laying just started about the time it got cold, so...

Other than the MUDDY yard, they have it pretty good, with their treadle feeder supply, and the feeder being moved once a week, so they can get at the feed that fell through. We give them a treat pretty much daily of scrap, meal worms, or one of these delicious birdseed cupcakes I made from a bag found in the garden shed. (coconut oil, birdseed, and meal worms)

Tomorrow, when I clean the coop, I am going to let them wander the garden. They have been standing at the fence looking longingly at the little green weeds OUTSIDE the fence.

I fear they might riot, if I deny them that freedom on a warm day in winter. ha ha

Which kinds will be leaving for new homes or freezer camp?

And are you interested in any free ducks?

Craigslist finds (still hoping to find that NHR roo for @Andrew10 , which is why I'm posting so much of these)
Free ducks and chickens
Two Ameraucana/Cochin mix roosters $5/ea Very pretty
California bunnies
Free bunny
Another free bunny--with cage
RP/BR tom. Seller wants a hen for trade
Whole bunch of cheap chickens Most about 3 years old. 20+ hens and one EE roo
Old English Dutch rooster
Game roos $60+/ea I'm going to hesitate to judge because the birds all seem in good condition, and game breeds always sell for a ton seemingly.
Nice looking RIR roo
White Runners and show quality OEGB
