INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

About what age do sprigs start to show? I have some 7 wk old roos & want to pick the best one to keep. So far no sprigs, but I don't know when I'd see such flaws.

I'm not sure what my name was... My profile says I've been a member since April so maybe it WAS this one.

I just don't want to make a fuss. They were about 10 weeks I think? I tried to look back at old pictures to see if he already had it, but I didn't get any good face shots. I'm guessing he did. This guy doesn't show so I'm putting it down to lack of knowledge on his part (and mine, obviously)

He also gave my daughter 6 day old black mottled chicks for free. They are 4 weeks and looks like 2 are roosters so we may end up breeding that group instead. I hope I can re-home the isabel rooster if we go that route.

I'm pretty new at chickens, but maybe just watch for little "nubs"? It has definitely increased in size over time.

Here are 2 lavs I'm growing out. So far both boys look good & have a large frame. I was able to easily sex the one with the larger, red comb by 3.5 weeks & the other by 4 weeks. I think they're about 6 weeks in these pics.

Hello! I'm new to chickens an recently bought 2 buff Orpington, 2 silver laced wyandotte, and 2 black austrolorp from Rural King. Then my son decided he would like to show in 4H. Does anyone know of a breeder of show chickens near southern indiana? LF, Brahma, cochin, or other friendly breed preferred. Thanks!
I went to your profile and found your first ever post on BYC. If this is what you remember posting first, then you are good. If you remember posting other things before this, then you might want to do some digging, if your earlier content is important to you.

Wow, $50 for a 10 week old cockerel! I hope you got him from a top winning breeder. If so, even with side sprigs and not being showable, he might turn out excellent for breeding for his other qualities. It would depend on how hard it is to breed the side sprigs out.

Oh wait, I just went back and saw that the breeder doesn't show. I'm a little confused. How is he getting away with charging $50 for cockerels? I sometimes have to give mine away for free.

(Well, not my purebred ones.)

No, not top winning...

Yep, that sounds right!!!

Well I went ahead today and ordered hatching eggs for more isabels from my pet chicken. They only had 3 so I also ordered 6 hatching eggs from "English Orpington Assortment". I will have some options at that point, hopefully. I was guessing that since the two pullets are his clutch mates, they have genes in common so we would be more likely to see a recurrence of the side sprig. If I do decide to get rid of him or other nice quality chickens in the future, what is a good way to do that?

I don't know. He had A LOT of them. Then when I asked about trading my rooster for another one, he said he didn't have anymore. He is getting rid of them somewhere, somehow!

Okay, thanks! I don't mind people eating my roosters but I worry about them ending up in bad homes. Do you do any sort of screening process?
