INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Muscovies like to swim a lot when they're young, but my ones that are a year old only swim enough to bathe now.

I don't like keeping chickens and Muscovies together for the reason that the chickens are dominant over the feeders. We are remedying that and have a new chicken house in another area now, and the top trouble makers have been moved there.

When feeding waterfowl, I keep a water dish right beside the food for them to wash it down with.

Also, I add nutritional food yeast to the food for the extra niacin that waterfowl need. My food is actually homemade, so everyone gets the nutritional food yeast additive, even the chickens in a non-waterfowl area.

Are khaki campbells good with chickens? That's the breed I'm leaning towards...

Khakis and Runners are both smaller breeds that lay like crazy. Khakis are descended from Runners, mostly, but don't come in as many colors and are a little bigger in my experience. Ducks usually boss other fowl around. There just seems to be a dominant one in every group to steam shovel past chickens at feeding time. I've kept both breeds and a bunch more too, and I've always been able to keep them with chickens.

They seem to be getting along with the chickens. They're roughly the same age as my silkies, and they seem to be good friends with the silkies. They were snuggling in the corner last night, we had to move them all into the house, but they still stuck together. Its pretty much completely adorable. I'm really glad we decided to get them. I just really on the fence about getting a drake. Ducklings would be nice to have/sell in the spring, but I don't know that that is where I want to go with them.

Oh here is a funny pic. Guard Silkie Rooster. Mad that I caged his babies and taking them.

I'm hoping Lion-O develops those sweet Silkie dad traits. He's a stinker but was apparently sick when I got him :he ). He's such a lovely color and generally lap-worthy guy that I can't cull him. Really, really want to figure the genetics on his color. Such a pretty blond boy. While I don't think the specific dilution factors at work in him are making him more susceptible to illness, it is interesting that blond genes in chickens have been poorly studied---due to said strains of birds dying. The color is so lovely though that I've just got to breed it into some more birds.

Had to get him on Tylan, but he took it really well and hung out with me awhile after I was done dosing him last night. I'd hoped he'd settle in and start feeling better in quarantine, but that wasn't happening. Think he's mostly stressed from the move still, but it doesn't help that all the other guys pick on him and he was used to being top dog where he was from. So, I've found him hanging with the babies a bunch more than I want him to (he and the babies are small enough to exploit a few key gaps in my coop) so I started preemptively dosing the water where they're all hanging out.

Need to get some better pictures of him. He's such a stunning blond color. Been trying to figure what kind of blond he is (thinking pale golden blond is best fit so far) because he fits human hair colors better than he's fit any chicken colors so far. His body is mostly silver but stippled golden on the back. He has one light blue tail feather.

On another odd note, the only poult has super tiny nostrils, which us why it always seems to be inhaling it's water by accident. Not sure what's up with its nose.

Btw, we're in the market for a super cheap running vehicle since the engine on my husband's Corolla went kaput. Also, I could use prayers from those so inclined. Had a lot of really weird health stuff going on.
