I'm obsessed... I think I need a 10 Step Program...

We integrated them right away, overnight Saturday in fact so that they could be there when everyone else woke up. They're seeming to be really great pals with the silkies. But they're not going to bed in the house at night, which is understandable, its a little crowded. We left them out last night because they were just downstairs from the sleepers. We're getting the new coop in this weekend so they'll be good to go and we'll start training them to get in that coop, which will be lower for them.

Sunday they had a kitty litter box full of water to play in but i didn't witness them in it much. Just drinking, which is what I expected. From my understanding they don't go in the water much other than to clean up.

Monday after work I put a kiddie pool out there, after jumping in the kitty box they ran for the pool and spent all afternoon in it. When I went to check on everyone before leaving, the girls were back in there. So cute.

So I sold all my quails again.. LOL seen it coming. But now I have 4 Incubators that I have no use for.. 2 incubators are Little Giants 9300,(1 with 42 egg turner, and 1 with 144 quail egg rails. but I still have the 42 egg rails for it) The other two are yellow incubators bought off Ebay. The 1 story hold 56 eggs and the other is a two story incubator with a 144 quail egg turner and also has 2x 42 egg turnes. These are all old pictures from when I last incubated.

Silkies are slowly but surely integrating with everyone else.

Trying to get a decent plan in place regarding poultry (and then stick to it). Have a bunch of babies coming up nicely, but lots of them aren't going to fit the given breed plan, even once I get it precisely finalized.

1. I like the double combs most of the roosters here have (one V, one double rose, one half-Buttercup) because they're nifty and frost resistant.

2. I would like to eventually get something autosexing, which means I'll have to keep some barred birds around, and/or stick with partridge marked types and sex by head triangles.

3. I want a bird that's disease resistant and lays like crazy, so I'm keeping chicks with good Leghorn blood. Interestingly, Leghorns carry barred under their dominant white lab coats. Definitely keeping those kids--they're 95% white but have single barred black feathers here and there.

4. I had initially hoped for the modest goal of making silver laced Leghorns in a flavor other than single combed, but I no longer have full blooded lady Leghorns here--just these pied mixes. Love this goofy pied/exchequer-like color, but it won't breed true.

5. Have several such Leghorn/EE mixes carrying the blue egg genes most likely (strong linkage to pea combs, so I can use those pea combed chicks to keep the blue egg genes around even though I have no blue layers now).

6. The black chicks and blue chicks are mostly Marans and/or EE, and the same would follow for the birchen pullet that's hatched.

7. The silkies are going to wind up a separate project. Want to understand the genetics behind Lion-O's pretty blond hair. Eventually really want to see that in other breeds because it's so pretty.

Going to have to make a thread somewhere else on this stuff and stop spamming everyone here

Anyone find a feed mill in North Central Indiana? Elwood, Noblesville, Fishers, Anderson, Muncie? Even Kokomo? I think I'm in the middle of a food desert here. We get Dumor from TSC, but I'd like to explore other options for my 25 chickens.

I'd sure love to know as well! I have well over 60+ muscovys! And tractor supply Dumor is getting to be a pretty pennie..

Anyone find a feed mill in North Central Indiana? Elwood, Noblesville, Fishers, Anderson, Muncie? Even Kokomo? I think I'm in the middle of a food desert here. We get Dumor from TSC, but I'd like to explore other options for my 25 chickens.

Didn't you hatch hundreds? Did you decide to get completely out of quail or did you just sell off all the recent hatches?

My numbers are SLOWLY going down. I sold my extra pair of laced orps to a friend. I should sell another pair of lav orps but it's so hard when they all have names & great personalities. The good news is that the numbers are going down by my choice & NOT because of the stupid fox that has been hanging around.

Speaking of fox..... I saw this at the fair this weekend. Perhaps I should make one or at least buy one & hang it up as a warning to any fox visitors. LOL

We went to the Sandwich, IL fair for my birthday & the 2 highlights were the demolition derby and an amazing eclair.

I'm just trying to understand silkies in general! DD's fluff balls are so "over the top" friendly! She held them frequently over the summer. Now that she's in school, I find her silkies standing on my boots or circling my legs like a cat every time I'm out there. They also "cry" to be picked up. Today I was squatting & petting my laced orps, then a jealous silkie came running up & chased them away so she could have all of my attention. Orps are not the brightest breed. I had to laugh when an English orp cockerel got beat up by a silkie pullet 1/2 his size.

There used to be a place outside of Berrien Spring, MI. I can't for the life of me remember the name though. I don't know how close that would be for you

Gist Feeds in Alexandria, IN. (475 Linwood Rd, Alexandria, IN 46001) I haven't been there yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
Might also check with Agrarian in BRip, they might know of somewhere closer to Indy. (1051 E 54th St, Indianapolis, IN 46220)
