On the hawk, those bird bangers hare really worked here. Any time I see a hawk around I use them. I want them to be afraid of the area.

There are some times during the year where they're around more than others, of course. I've never had to deal with one of the small ones - at least that I've seen. I know they can be just unrelenting.

It's OK..... and yes, this thread is very social about ALL things. - even for people who don't live in IN. LOL

As chicken owners, we all have to deal with predators. My concern with the bird bangers is that we live in a neighborhood. (suburb of Chicago) People in the city must deal shootings & I'd hate to scare my neighbors. I was hoping the cap gun would work, but the answer was no.

When the fox was coming around, my dog got a daylight job as chicken guard / predator deterrent. For the first couple months he loved it! He gladly spent most of the day outside. A friend gave us a dog house, but instead of using it, he was crawling through the chicken door & using the run as shelter from the rain. When the temps reached freezing, the dog no longer wanted to be outside for more than 20-30min. Also, the feed bill went up - a lot! I soon discovered that the dog was going into the run and eating right out of the chicken feeder!

And, here I thought he only liked to eat THAT after it had passed through a chicken's digestive system!

Yes, I thought about you being in a neighborhood and wondered if the bangers would "fly" (no pun intended).

If you know your neighbors well enough you could warn them that you got a louder cap gun that sounds like a fire cracker.... OR.... you could try the "screamers". Mine will also shoot the screamers that are used in the same way. They don't have the loud bang, just the whistler sound.

Here are some 11 wk old lav orps. We should KNOW the gender by now.... (Usually by 6 weeks I can confirm the gender guesses that I had made at 3-4 weeks!)

Please tell me if you agree with my guesses:

Male (about the only one I feel confident about)

Male? (late bloomer) He has a little more height to his comb than the females, and his wattles look like they're dropping.

Here they are all together. 2 Males on left / 2 females on right

The 5th chick has always acted female. The comb is tiny but the wattles are big. This one is Jewel's chick. Jewel also had very large wattles & a tiny comb, so there's still a good chance she's female.
