INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

PS, this one check had better not be a roo!
Oh do I know how you feel! We had a tiny runt serama x silkie mix. It would have died because it was just so small and weak compared to the other chicks. i took it out 3-4xs per day and let it have some quality time with some soaked feed. "Micro" lived but turned out to be a cockerel.

You might find a chick in the morning ☺. Do you think it would have been different ( more success) by hatching the eggs in the incubator ? I would like to hatch chicks this year and not sure if utilize incubator or let Mother Nature do her thing by letting a hen hatching the eggs
If you want a lot of chicks (and want to witness the hatching process) the incubator is great. If you want what's easy, a good broody hen is awesome. She keeps the right temp, humidity, and turns without any adjustments, thermometers, or adding water. You don't have to worry about a brooder, power outages, or flock integration.

We actually use both. I'm addicted to hatching and am glued to the incubator window every hatch day! However, I also plan it so the timing works for a broody hen to take over once hatched.

Hello,

I purchased some chicks from a hatchery and since I choose the rare breed selection, they did not marked the breed of the chicks. I would love if someone with more experience identifying chicks could tell me what breed I got. The chicks are 9 days old today. I have been looking online photos of baby chicks and this is what I think I got:
Chick number 1: Barred Plymouth Rock or Dominique?
Chick number 2: Dark Cornish?
Chick number 3: Andalusian
Chick number 4: Oh Lord this one who knows many chicks are yellow
Chick number 5: Easter Egger
Chick number 6: Same as number 1
None of the chicks have feather in their legs (in case this helps)

Thanks so much in advance

I love these fun guessing games! Here are a few ideas:

chick 1 & 6 = Correct, BR if you see a single comb or Dom if the area by comb is flat (rose comb) If BR or Dom, the darker #6 looks girl-ish.
chick 2 = Could be Easter Egger or olive egger. Could be so many things because so many breeds & hybrids have that pattern as chicks.
chick 3 = could be any breed that's blue
chick 4 = a white chicken LOL (white rock, white orpingon, white leghorn, cornish cross- if it grows super fast)
chick 5 = reminds me of a speckled sussex, welsummer, or brown leghorn.

Oh and BTW Congratulations on the new chicks! :celebrate:love

Thank you! actually the yellow chick# 4 is the smallest of all . I am intrigue to see what the baby yellow chick turned out to be. :)

Which hatchery did they come from? That can narrow it down quite a bit. Plus, usually if a hatchery sells chicks as an assortment, they'll also list what's possible to come in it, too. ;)
I got them from Meyer Hatchery. They have a page on their website with day old chick pictures to help with the identification. However, so many baby chicks look the same. Meyer Hatchery don't identify chicks when they sell unspecified rare breeds. I did not specified the chick I wanted because by selecting the rare breed bundle you get more change to get more variety and better price. ;)
I have to tell you that this is my first time ever purchasing chicks by mail and the reason why I choose Meyer hatchery was due to their proximity to Indiana (hatchery 4 hours drive one way). They shipped my baby chicks on Monday and I got them on Wednesday morning. I was stressed out thinking they will not arrive alive due to the weather. My chicks arrived safely. Poor babies were all snuggling together to be warm.

Ah, yes, Meyer is usually my go-to if I need chicks quick! ("Need" :gig ) Glad it went well for you. Having chicks shipped is really stressful, on us and on the poor babies! Too bad there isn't a better way to get them sometimes.

So, Meyer's rare breed assortment can include any of the following:

Ancona, Andalusian, Wyandotte, Delaware, Dominique, Jersey Giant, Brahma, Partridge Rock, Light Brown Leghorn, Hamburg, Sussex, German Spitzhauben Appenzeller, Buckeye, Sumatra, Cochin, Polish, Marans, Faverolles, Welsummer, Exchequer Leghorn, Sultan, Ameraucana, Blue and Lavender Orpington, Heritage Barred Plymouth Rock, Mottled Houdan, Easter Eggers, Lakeshore Eggers, Green Queens

Based on that...

1 and 6 both appear to have single combs, so I'd say they're both 'Heritage Barred Plymouth Rocks', but they could also be Dominiques if they have rose combs, as you and @Faraday40 both pointed out. :)

2 is either an Easter-egger, Lakeshore Egger, or Green Queen. I don't see any feathering on the legs (Green Queens are Faverolles mixes so it's likely there would be some sparse leg feathering), and I think the Lakeshores are Legbar mixes and don't have fluffy cheeks, so I think she's an Easter-egger.

3 could be a blue Andalusian, Cochin, Polish, Marans, Ameraucana, or Orpington from that list. I see no crest, fluffy cheeks, or feathering on the legs, so she's likely either an Andalusian or an Orp. It should be easy to tell once she's older; skinny hen with a large comb that lays white eggs is an Andalusian, while fluffy hen with small comb that lays brown eggs is an Orp.

4 is a tough one. Does she have feathering on her feet? It almost looks like she has fluffy cheeks on her, so I'm wondering if she's maybe a Green Queen or an Easter-egger. If she doesn't have fluffy cheeks, she could also be a White Cochin if her feet are fuzzy, or a Delaware if not. Editing to add, I forgot about their White Marans, which may or may not be feather-footed, but she could be one of those, too. Marans would have pinkish or white feet when older, while Cochins and Delawares would have yellow feet.

5 also looks like she has fluffy cheeks to me, so I'd say an Easter-egger or Green Queen there, too. If she doesn't have fluffy cheeks, then she's probably a Partridge Rock or Cochin, depending on if her feet are feathered or not.

Number 5 looks a lot like an Easter-egger I got from Meyer last year, my girl Mona. This is her now. :love When she was a baby, I called her Brownie or Brownie-Bite because she was so chocolatey-looking. :p She lays a super pretty green egg. 💚

It happened! Finally have a hatched chick! :)

IMG_3833.jpg

My Silkie pushed all the other eggs out last night, they were frozen when I went out this morning. Upon candling and then dissecting them, two were early failures and one was fully formed with beak and eyes and feathers. Of course, I could have tried putting it back under, but as I said, the eggs were out all night and frozen this morning. Not sure what happened there, maybe as she's a 10 month old first time broody, she just panicked when the one started hatching and abandoned the others. I'm guessing she'll do better next time. :) Welcome any feedback.

Nonetheless, this is a success! I've added to my flock and have a new member that is hopefully a hen. :)

OMG what a cutie!!!! Are you going to put her in a brooder? wait, you only have one chick right? she will be lonely... maybe putting a stuff small animal in the brooder with her? I did that one time that one of my chicks was sick. I put her in a different brooder alone while recovering and add a small stuff animal with her and she was so cute snuggling with the stuff animal.
Again Congrats!!!
