Day 3 update here! Mom and baby are fine. today, the mom and baby were up scratching around very briefly during the 40 degree day before returning back to the warmth of the nest. The baby didn’t like it one bit, but followed mom regardless.

I had a horrible event also with neighbor dogs. Please feel free to vent! 2 of them running loose killed 2 of our bottle baby goats 13 years ago. My Dad was outside getting his paper and saw the whole thing. The larger dog turned towards my Dad and intended to attack him also. He didn't have his glasses on, just went to get his paper. He actually threw rocks to defend himself! He had called me so we arrived to see those goats kids die and my Father in tears. County police told us to shoot any dog that acts as a predator. We live here now and if I see any aggression in a stray dog they get shot. Any dog that's a pet becomes a predator if it's not confined and controlled.

You are 100% right , any dog even as a pet could become a predator. My dogs don't bother the chickens but I will never leave them unattended with my chickens, because after all they are dogs. You poor dad, i can't even imagine.... I am an animal lover so watching baby goats being killed by a predator that would break my heart.

1st egg is Jewel's egg. If you stare, you can see the separated ring.
The next 4 are from diff orp pullets. (One pic for each egg, so 5 eggs total)

I don't know much about fertile egg but I do see the ring in all the eggs

OMG what a cutie so do you have the chick and mom with the rest of the flock? don't they bother the baby? do you have any idea what breed the chick might be?

Cute chick. It always surprises me how hardy broody-raised chicks are. In a brooder she'd be at a constant 90-95'F, but with mama, she's out scratching around in cold weather.


Meanwhile, my little odd family is doing well. Solo is no longer afraid of her new family. The chick started riding on mom's back about a day ago. I love it when they do that!

They are adorable. I got a question... when you have a broody hen sitting on some eggs. Do you leave her in the coop with everyone else or do you set her aside in a tote until she hatch the eggs?

I was worried about it too, and I’m sure it can happen, but the rooster and hens haven’t barely even noticed the chick. The only exception was they one of the other Silkies laid next to the momma Silkie on the first day, which was very sweet.

aww I heard so many good things about having silkies that is making me want silkies now LOL, so you keep your silkies and the rest of the hens together on the same coop right? Does the silkies have an enclosed run?

Got several broodies. My BCM hen, Muscovies and an infertile goose! One of my Leghorn. I guess we see what happens next.

I think fertile on numbers 2 & 5. 1 possibly, but I’d not bother to try to hatch it.
