Hmm, I was just talking to DH about getting more dual purpose birds. Of the 47 we have, only 11 are dual purpose and too old for butchering, the rest are bantams

So, how are the RIR's or Delawares for this purpose? Haven't butchered in a looooong time but we really need to start thinking about it soon.

Dels are good dual purpose. the RC RIR's are not the powerhouse layers that their Straight Combed cousins are, but they are GINORMOUS.

Ginormous

I thought I was the only one who said that! Well, honestly, I'm not worried about egg laying but I don't want meaties either, just a good solid bird. I will say yes, I am wanting some RC RIR's. I am just so sick of store chicken, how is the meat and when would be a good time for butchering? 18-20 weeks?
Thanks Miss_Jayne!

Oh, I almost forgot! I have a new announcement! Rob and I needed a new pool liner before we could open the pool this season. Well, since we had both been laid off for over a year and Rob just getting back to work in April, we weren't sure if we could afford the liner. Long story short, I bartered with a girl from craigslist and got a new pool liner, solar cover and a bunch of chemicals!! No out of pocket expense! So, YES, the pool will be open for our party!!! I will post the rules regarding swimming on the main page in a bit!!!

Thanks, ya me too. Plus, I really don't like to swim in public. But it's going to be open regardless. How's everything on the ChickenFront with you AC?

yepper pepper, you are welcome! you could do that with either breed. the RIR's are very mild tempered. i can collect eggs the week before we come down if you'd like.

i should also have some hatched out!

i'll hang out with AC drooling over chickens. well, i'll try not to drool on kids while painting and twisting! how wrong and gross would THAT be?!?!?!

Just no drooling in the pool!
Eggs are good unless it's easier to transport chicks. We have a snazzy bator that Rob built and I love it! I would only need about 10. I am more of a red meat person but sometimes, I just gotta have chicken!!
I know I will be checking out the chickens and animals as well, since my ginormous daughter was born, I do like public pools!!
