jywel417 I'm so sorry to hear about your birds

I hope the other sick ones make it through! I haven't had any trouble with my TSC chickens yet *knock on wood*. I maybe have some leghorn chicks. I'm not sure when my bantam wyandottes will start laying....

Well that was scary, I got chicks from TSC too, though mine are all healthy as horses. My neighbor told that coccidia (sp?) is in the dirt and birds pick it up from there, and that once it's in your soil it's devilishly hard to get rid of, especially if you have a lot of land. Could your birds have gotten sick from your soil? What hatchery did your birds come from? My TSC birds came from Mt. Healthy. And how old were yours? Mine are about 11 weeks old now. I am just wondering if maybe I shouldn't get TSC chicks next year...

I'm also sorry to hear about your chicks. I feel so helpless when they are sick like that; there's nothing to do but try to make them as comfortable as possible. I had a similar experience with a pair of red silkie chicks that I bought at a swap this spring--both just went downhill after about a month. All my other chicks were okay.

It is possible it is from the dirt as well. Where we built the coop and run we later discovered was where my grandmother threw trash for years (they built the house in the 1940s) and the kids have scratched up all sorts of stuff. We had already decided we might need to get dirt from the local landscaping business to put down a nice layer of trash-free dirt for them to scratch in and such. At the moment I go thru and remove anything they may have scratched up during the day that they don't need to have in there with them.

All my TSC chicks had been doing fine until this past week or so, I just thought it was odd that the sick/dead ones were all from that batch. I think they get their chicks thru Privett and possibly some thru Ideal. The 3 sex links and 4 orps out in the pen that came from two different sources and are older so far (knock on wood) are doing fine, and the younger ones that also came from several other different sources are doing fine so far as well. I don't know if it was the age group or what. . . and since I have lost two standard EE and then the 2 little bantam girls I can't say it bantams vs large fowl either . . . .

However, sulmet for everyone !!! lol and then go about trying to figure out how to disinfect the run area of cocci . . . . working at a vet I know how much of a pain cocci can be in dogs and cats, which usually have a much easier, more confined, area to try and keep clear of waste and such . . . . sooo if I have everything cleared up by the time for the swap then I will feel I can bring some new kids home LOL time for some summer cleaning !

Aww Whitney, I am so sorry to hear about your chicks

Is anyone bringing ducklings? I want some runner ducks, and some call ducks too. Call ducks are for next year's 4-H. My older daughter would prefer to take ducks than to take chickens. I'll also be on the look out for sebrights, speckled sussex, polish, and showgirls. Trying to go back through all these posts to read what people are, and aren't bringing is a bit time consuming since most of it is just conversation. I am just trying to get an idea of what will be there.

The first page shows a post # for each person to show what they can or are bringing. I would love some showgirls myself. The only showgirl we have is starting to look more like a roo each day

Is there a photographer for this BYC meetup yet? I am trying very hard to get a really good camera right now, something that I can use to go into business for myself as a photographer. If I have the camera by the time of the meetup, I will do all the photography for it.

addiedunn had mentioned it but I don't see why you couldn't. Maybe you both could collaborate something together. I don't know what kind of camera you are needing but if you don't have one by then, I can let you use mine. My uncle has a bunch of professional cameras for sale also but they are not digital
