Indianapolis,IN Marion County Fair...Set-up for 2011 Open Class!

That would just be so awesome.. This year we had to wait OUTSIDE the barn for about an hour because the tester was running late. The person that was incharge wouldn't let anyone cage their birds. We had to end up giving the birds water they were out there that long. This was the first year that has happened.. Everyone was getting mad and I think some people left.

Hopefully we can get everyone tested before the fair so we don't have this happen again. I think it cost me around $25 for 11 birds to be tested even though they were from NPIP flocks...

What all needs to be done in order to show? So that I can get an idea? I know the birds have to be tested, but what else? Can't afford the books just yet on showing, so I thought I'd ask.

The testing is free from me. I am doing it as a favor for the club.
Far as preparing, depends on the breed. Cochins are a pain cause of them foot feathers. I have a boy, and it MAYBE his last show here at the fair. I am a late entry and had no intention on showing anything at our State Fair, but found out that the significance of keeping our Fairs Poultry Shows buildings full.
To be honest I only shown twice. I am sure their are other folks who are way more detail oriented on their conditioning program then me. I keep my birds in small 8' by 8' portable pens. On the grass. Fresh water food daily. just the normal care you would give your babies anyway. A week before the show, bathe and look for bugs. I don't use soap. I just hose them down to wash them off and then take a diluted solution of Glycerin and water to spray bottle on them. The oils from the Glycerin is vegatble based and great for the sheen. Some people will bring small brushes to make sure after they put the bird into the cage all the feathers are strait. Again, I just put my birds into the cage. lolol I don't do much in the way of primping my birds. But, I suggest you do. Don't live what I do, live what I say and you'll do great. lololol

My neighbor uses vaseline on the comb, legs, and wattles before she shows her in 4-H. Is this ok, or frowned upon in more serious judging competitions. I'll have to look into getting some liquid glycerin. Where can I buy that? Currently I just wash mine with water, and a small amount of dish soap.

I can test my own birds. Just didn't seem right so I had Ron Patterson test my birds. He did it for his 4-H kids in Boone County. Very very nice guy. He tests Doug's birds, Doug tests his birds. their both NPIP approved testers. Just seem more honest if we have another test our own birds despite being testers too.

I wished I used Vaseline in our Columbus IN show. I totally spaced it. And could have used it to get the comb nice and shiney

We might show a few Millie D'uccles. Still not absolutely sure but maybe. Kathleen and I will definetly be considering it though. The baby Sultans we have might be ready to show by then also. I hope to have others by then too but we shall see. We are so proud of you AC! I know that you will do an outstanding job of taking tare of the show!

AC you need to talk to Jack. He is doing the job you have for the State Fair. He knows alot of string men. I bet he could help you out by passing the word.
