This is just about the only spot in my home where I can find space to raise quail. It's accually my furnace room, but I don't use the furnace because of other cheaper ways to hear my home. Anyway! I'm removing the electric furnace, cleaning out the dust and sealing the hole in the floor that leads to the duct work. All in preparation for quail.
The room measures 24" wide x 32" deep and is ruffly 7' tall.
I'm planning on building a rolling shelf system that can easily be rolled in and out for easy cleaning.
I'll place vents in the bottom of door and a fan at the top for clean fresh air circulation. And timed lights.
A few questions I have are.
1. Does the height of the cage matter? How much taller than the bird should the cage be?
2. With the door open most of the time, and lights installed to supplement the sunlight threw the near by window. Is this space sufficient?
3. Giving that the bottom 18-24" of this system will be for storage how many cages can I stack in here? Keep in mind the door will be open about 14-16 hours aday.
My goal is egg and meat production. I'm going to start off with a small number and work my way up. But I'd still like to have an idea of how much production I could get from this space. And it its a healthy way to raise quail.
