Indy area Chicken work Co-Op

I have a third duck laying eggs.  The pullet eggs look so small compared to my older duck's eggs.  The new layer is only 18 weeks old.  I was surprised when I saw the third egg today.

Oh, interesting! My CAYUGAS are starting to nest, I think, I'm hoping for eggs soonish. It seems they usually start at about 5 months.
You give me hope for a few weeks early

I'm not that positive on the exact hatch date of the new layer. I picked up a few khaki's from craig's list when my shipped ducks did not make it the first time. They are the ones I think have the 1/29 hatch date based on the size of the duckling when I picked them up. But the new layer's egg shell looks just like my other khaki duck's so I'm almost positive it came from a khaki.

We are about to head to Greenwood to look at a play house for free that would make a great coop. It was listed on Craiglist and is It stands about 12 - 15 ft high. It is roughly 9ft by 7ft. - according to the listing: http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/zip/4554188852.html

We will know more when we get there - but we probably need help and someone with a trailer - maybe some brute force? Right now we have a temporary coop in a little tikes playhouse and it is really small!

So I thought I would put this out there and see if anyone can help - and let you know more when we get there and back.

It looks like they have a storage barn too.
Depending on the day, my Dh might be able to provide some of the brute force. Maybe even a saw to help with the posts if they are cemented into the ground.

The storage barn is is pretty bad shape except for the roof. I think it is 10 x 12 anyway and that is just to hard of a size to move without paying a fortune - and my hubby is not even sure it would survive a move! We definitely want the playhouse. It looks like it is in good shape. We do NOT plan to keep it up on stilts (I am not climbing a ladder to get into my coop!), and it would most likely need to come off them to make it stable enough to transport (otherwise it would be top heavy and easily fall over!) The landlord is the one who posted the listing. When we got there there were 2 pit bulls in the back yard. She thought the tenants had taken the pits with them over the weekend. That means we were unable to get exact dimensions and we need those in order to find a truck or trailer to rent. So we are in a holding pattern. I would have liked to get this done tomorrow, since it is a weekend, but it looks like that may not be possible. I think it will be harder to get help during the week so it may not be until next weekend. .

I will keep you posted - thanks! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Did you ever find some goat milk?

If we aren't tied up we may be able to help next weekend.. very hard to plan anything right now, but post and we will try to work it out.
DH and I have moved several sheds so its no big thing.

I thought the shed looked rough. But I'm glad you posted about it. I keep dreaming of getting a pair of goats. The fencing is my biggest delay / hurdle right now. While I did not find goat's milk, I found some fresh cow's milk. Almost as good but still I'll need to get a good taste of the goat's milk before I put up a costly fence. But if the shed had been in good shape, and a bit skinnier, I might have asked for it.

So far Dh should have time to help on a Saturday. But we need to get some roosters processed this month too. The crowing is getting out of hand for me.

I will have kids very soon, Sophie is on her first breeding and should kid late july. I dont think Sugar "took" she does not appear pregnant. So I may have fresh goats milk for you to try out! I let Sugar go dry a couple months before breeding, so I don't have a doe in milk right now.

That sounds wonderful. I need to have you and your DH over sometime for a picnic. Then you could check out the area I think might work for the goats. And you could tell me how easy goat care is. The book I've been reading has just about made me never want to have a goat.
