Hi all,

My Polish hen Thimble has an infected toe; we’re not sure what happened or how long it’s been that way.
She isn’t lethargic and she’s foraging normally, but she steps gingerly with that foot sometimes.

My mom and brother are caring for the birds while I’m at school; they have been spraying it with vetericyn and bandaging it loosely.

Here are pictures:

I’m worried that the narrow section above the swelling might be going necrotic/auto amputating. Is there anything else we can be doing?

Yes, it can affect just one or a few toes. If a string got caught around it, or if she got an injury on the end, it could also look like that. I would just keep putting a disinfectant such as Betadine on it daily. The tip and nail may well auto amputate in a few weeks, but that is not very serious. If that happens, take another picture.

Absolutely. :/
That is her longer toe on the foot. If it got damp, and it wasn't warmed up it can get frostbite. I've got a few birds missing the ends of the toes. Sometimes it isn't preventable. If it's frostbite it will eventually fall off.
