Hello everyone,
I have a 9 month old black Ameraucana cockerel that I had to hand rear due to severe wryneck and I can’t even begin to explain how I feel about that bird.

Last week, I came home and I noticed my Ayam Cemani rooster looked like he had blood on him and then I realized Egg never came to the fence. These birds are not in the same yard, Chimi (the Cemani) is clipped so he shouldn’t be able to get over it, and Egg (the Ameraucana) doesn’t do much. Chimi jumped the fence tore Egg up and part of Egg’s eyelid has died so he only has maybe 1/4 of his right lower eyelid. I did take him to the vet because I was worried he had an infection due to the cheesy plaque in his beak. Vet said he was fine, just rub neosporin on his face twice a day. I was not so sure, I come from a poultry background so a vet saying “chickens don’t get abscesses like us” kind of weirded me out because yes they do, it’s just not pus, it’s a weird waxy plaque that makes me cringe.

Anyway, I showed a pic to a vet I used to work with, and he said he’s going to need eye drops forever and he sent the pic to his other vet friend who says Eggy probably has infectious coryza. It explains the weird, unpleasant beak smell, the plaque, and the gurgling when he fights to get away from me putting ointment on his face as he pulls his neck into his body.

That being said, he’s been to the only vet in the area that sees birds, and culling him is absolutely not an option. He’s basically got his own room in the house now.

To treat this, could I use Duramycin 72-200 from tractor supply? Thank you for any help. Also, I’m sorry for making you look at his face, he was such a beautiful bird. Now he’s my little Harvey Dent. I’m gonna miss that excessive cheek puff.

Without testing, it would be hard to know if this is a wound infection or a respiratory disease, such as MG or coryza. E.coli and other bacteria can smell foul as coryza supposedly does. If it is coryza, SMZ-TMP or sulfadimethoxine can treat symptoms. That might also treat a bacterial infection from pecking. See if the vet friend can give you a prescription for one of those. Try cleaning the wound and eye, and getting any pus out by pressing around the eye, and then apply Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin twice a day.

At this point, there’s nothing wrong with his eye other than it not having an eyelid. I’m not seeing any pus, just the plaques in his mouth back down around where our molars are. It’s kind of hard to explain the smell, it’s not dead, but just enough to make me go Ew, something isn’t right. It doesn’t smell like a sour crop and it doesn’t smell like festering abscess. Just cheesy plaque and sneezing/gurgling when I’m trying to put neosporin on his face. But you’re right, there really is no telling without a test and I wish the original vet would have listened to me better. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing and see where we go from there. Thanks!
