Hi! I have a chicken that about a month ago came down with IC. Been treating her first with clindamycin ointment, them with oxytetracycline and now at the end of week 2 of bactrim ds. She can partially open 1 eye but is still really swollen and under both eyes is a large hard lump. She started bleeding from her right eye, which happened one other time but i think she just scratched her eyelid. Idk what to do anymore. Looking for suggestions on different treatments youve found effective, not to be told to go to the vet. Thanks.

Photos may be helpful.

If the eye is really swollen, it may have pus that needs to be pressed out and removed in order for it to heal.

I actually tried that after i made this post. No luck. Its not even moving. I almost feel like i need to lance it, but with it so close to her eye i dont want to mess anything up. I ordered denaguard to try next.

Im very attached to this girl. Her name is Dexi, and she hates being in the run or coop so she has spent most of her life in the tree next to the coop. She was my first "tree chicken", and my first blue egg layer. Ive already saved her once during a very taxing molt where she ended up on deaths door as skin and bones. Aside from the eyes, shes doing fine!

The solidified pus in the sinus cavity usually needs to be removed whether expressed or lanced for antibiotics to be effective. For coryza, you may need to add a sulfa antibiotic as well. Sulfadimethoxine, SMZ TMP (bactrim, sulfatrim) are common ones. Here is where to source one of those:

Ive done bactrim for almost 2 weeks. Whats the safest way to lance it?

Do you know how to tube feed? I think I would want to tube fluids to her before I lanced it. She looks like she's dehydrated.

Step 1:
Bring the bird inside and place it in a warm room; 80-85 degrees is ideal (watch for signs of overheating).

Step 2:
Weigh the duck

Step 3:
Once warmed, correct hydration. This should not be done until the bird is warmed up! Tube warmed (102 degrees) Pedialyte or Gatorade at 14 ml per pound of body weight, wait 60-90 minutes, and repeat. If no poop is produced by 3 hours after first tubing, repeat once more.

Step 4:
Once the bird is pooping you can start tubing warmed Kaytee Exact baby bird food or a non-lay crumble (lay crumble has too much calcium). Start by tubing 14 ml per pound of body weight and increase a little at each feeding. Do not exceed 23 ml per pound of body weight. Sick birds are tube fed 2-4 times a day.
