Hi there,

I’m extremely sad to have to post this but we just recently about a week ago got this baby chick. She has a severely inflamed vent. We have cleaned it out, soaked it, and tried to push it back in but nothing is working. What should we doI’m extremely sad to have to post this but we just recently about a week ago got this baby chick. She has a severely inflamed vent. This sounds as if the chick is severely constipated which can happen when the brooder temperature is too high and/or they do not drink enough water.

Give the chicken butt a long warm soak and try to carefully pry out the clogged poo. Dry the chick carefully using a hair dryer and apply some coconut oil on the vent to loosen up the gunk.
Make the chick eat some coconut oil (chill to be able to offer some pieces) to help loosen the constipation. Have it eat the coconut oil pieces and some apple and a little natural yoghurt several times a day and soak it in warm epsom water at least three times a day repeating the above prodecure until the clogged poop gets out and the prolapse thus can slide back.

It takes a lot of persistance, patience and sensitivity to not harm the little one even further, so good luck!
