Info about selling eggs?

When my chickens start laying eggs my husband and I want to start selling eggs, but I don't know all the rules to doing this. for instance, what do you need to feed your chickens for their eggs to be considered "organic"? Since mine are free range does this mean they are organic? Or do you have to feed them organic feed too? How much do a dozen sell for? Do you have to be licensed to sell eggs if you live in the country? ANY info will be nice, thanks!!

i dont think you have to have a linces but talk to some one first i sell mine for 3.00 a dozen or 4.50 for 18. i think that would mean they are organic if you dont use any chemicals on the chickens or there food organic foos might be better but i am not possitive.

If you are feeding them non-organic feed they are not organic eggs. Organic eggs come from chickens fed organic feed.

If they are free-range you can state that or advertise the eggs as being from pasture-raised hens.

I wouldn't sell them as organic too many catches.Like the foods you feed them, medicines etc. I sell mine as Farm Fresh for $2.00 a dozen the going rate around here.

We are thinking of selling ours for $3 if they have their own egg carton, and $3.50 if they don't have a carton.

Call your local / county extension office. In Georgia you have to take a candling class they offer for free in order to sell eggs. Here free range eggs sell for 3.00-3.50 dz. Be careful in advertising them organic or look up under federal/state regulations for wording or feeding practices for "organic".

I was going to get certified organic but the costs for the first year alone were over $750. I don't believe you can claim "organic" unless you're properly certified by a certification board (here, it's Oregon Tilth). There are similar adjectives that are 'uncontrolled' : farm-fresh, natural, uncaged, and so forth. Bit of online searching should help a lot, good luck!

Careful of used cartons, though. Germs.
