Info on Magpie Ducks?

I have a male and a female both great pets. they are quiet, small, and the female (Carol) lays eggs a lot.

the female is on the right, a Saxony female in the middle, and the male magpie on the far left.

My male is breeds with all the females but the least with the other magpie female.

He does breed with this one pekin female a lot and eventually she hurt her leg and we kept her alone till we got a baby mixed breed from incubation. A while ago we put her and the baby with the other ducks and they did fine. She was laying eggs and was basically healthy again. But then a couple of days ago she was attacked and eaten by a weasel during the night. He also got 5 other babies that were incubated. The baby she was with is fine though.
This is my male and female magpie along with a Saxony female. This is the pekin that died and the baby.

I have three magpies that I got from a gal down the road from me. I had never really heard of them and they were a bit of an impulse buy so I didn't know to look for markings. Anyhow, two turned out to be boys (Howard and John Redcorn) and only the one girl (Lenore). We had to separate the males out when we integrated a group of ducklings we hatched so they live with our kune kune pigs for now. At least until the girls are mature. Lenore started laying at five months and is the sweetest duck! She is already trying to sit on a single egg so we may let her hatch out a brood this spring. Only Howard is properly

marked, but I still think they are so charming with their unique coloring.

My magpie flock started out as an impulse buy too. Now I'm working on breeding them. You have 3 mice ones. Yes the one is better colored.

This thread is a little on the dead side. There is another Magpie thread that is more active, but even then it isn't that active. There seems to be a small number of people that have magpies on here

If you are on facebook there is a group called Magpie Ducks that is more active.

Enjoy them! I know I sure enjoy mine!

I'm a little surprised at how few people have them. They're really neat ducks. Poor Lenore is on the low end of the pecking order so she's not a bold girl, but she's much quieter than my Cayuga gals - boy are they freaking loud! At like 5 am. EVERY morning. But I wouldn't have it any other way :)
I'll check out the other thread, thanks much! Not on Facebook, but I appreciate the thought.
I'd like to let Lenore hatch out a bunch of ducklings but I don't think I should let her brothers donate themselves for the job. I've got a beautiful half cayuga, half runner male that is so neat looking and I thought it would be some pretty cool to see what their babies would look like. Purely for fun, of course.
Here's hoping!

Sounds like a plan.

I know what you mean. They are pretty ducks and are just plain cool..Well at least I think so. Not sure why there aren't more people that don't love them. I guess that it is a job for the few of us there are to spread the word on how great the are.
