Hello!!!:D I'm writing a report for school on whether vaccinated chickens or their eggs are truly safe for human consumption. One of the things I need to know is the ingredients in poultry vaccines, particularly Marek's disease. Does anyone know what the ingredients are, or know of a website I could use to find this information? Thank you!:bun

Also, if I had a chicken that I treated with amprolium for coccidiosis, could the amprolium end up in the systems of the people who ate that chicken later in its life?

Hi there, don't take this the wrong way and I'm not not trying to be mean/rude but please, please don't tell people you're homeschooled when researching topics like this, it feeds the stereotype that many people have.

Anyway.
Amprolium is just a thiamine (Vitamin B) inhibitor (blocker). It's harmless.

Coccidia (which are everywhere and all chickens have them) cause coccidiosis when there's a sudden flare up in the numbers.
They rip the G.I lining to shreds causing:
Pain.
Inflammation.
Lethargy.
Lack of nutrition absorption, leading to starvation.
Internal bleeding.

They feed on Vitamin B, blocking it typically reduces/kills the coccidia flare up, though sometimes stronger treatments are necessary, such a sulfa drugs.

Thank you so much! I never knew that!:wee

I'm a *** grader
It is generally not a good idea to post your age on the internet. Telling your grade is pretty close to telling your age. I suggest you edit your post to remove the grade. There should be an "edit" button at the bottom of the post for about 24 hours after you first made it.

Welcome To BYC
Zoetisus manufacturer's a Marek's Vaccine. You may want to reach out to them for the information you are seeking about ingredients.

Amprolium is an FDA approved Coccidiostat, there is no withdrawal period when given at the correct dosing.

FARAD (Food Animal Residue and Depletion Program) has information published about certain drugs and residues. You can see one article below.

If you search Merck Vet Manual for specifics about certain diseases and medications/vaccines, you may also find a wealth of information.

Good luck with your studies and report!
